What would you like to sell?

A mate of mine is looking at a sideline in occaisonally buying cars at auction and selling them on, mostly through people he knows rather than the great unwashed.

Putting aside all the usual comments about mugs game/ waste of time/ no profit/ trading standards/ warranties etc, my question is:

If you were to be a car dealer, what make or type of car would you like to trade?

I have always wanted to be a classic car dealer, with a great fondness now for 80's stuff.

I'd love to trade old British kit cars but most folk wouldn't touch them with somebody else's barge pole. Just think of the fun you could have specialising in exotica like Shirley, Rochdale, Hamblin and Superbee...

Absolutely! If I had the money, I'd have a showroom full of cars I love with grossly overoptimistic sticker prices...

I have a rather rare Alfa Romeo 33 Giardinetta 4x4 for sale as a restoration project. There are only three left in the UK and is advertised in one place for silly money (so she doesn't sell).

'er in panties said either the car went or she would. After two weeks of looking she couldn't find anywhere to go so the Alfa's sort of available-ish.

Classic/Retro market is the first hit during a recession/depression buy as many as you can and moth ball them in a barn somewhere. That's your pension sorted.

I'd like to sell nicely modified cars. Cars which have something unique about them. Sleepers, Conversions, track day cars... Limited Market but the buyers would be petrolheads who I'd enjoy dealing with.

I appreciate there'd be no money in it!

In an ideal world where one doesn't worry about warranties etc, I'd like to specialise in bargain barges up to £8-10k.

Classics and retro

I wanted to sell Alfa Romeos, so I left Citroen and went to sell them. No regrets, its fantastic. Alfa customers are incredibly loyal, passionate about the brand, and a little bit mad. Just how I expected them to be. The cars are great too; not as characterful as Alfas of old, but cracking things.

A range of simple, value for money, easy to repair trucks & 4x4's to developing nations. Something akin tonthe original Land Rover, with simple mechanics, parabolic leaf sprung suspension, limited electrics and sufficient creature comforts to get the job done.

I'd like to sell 80's and early 90's sports stuff. Any homologation specials, Japanese stuff, RS Cosworths, rally cars. Anything I could get my hands on!

If I wasn't being so specialised, I'd just like to sell anything with a bit of poke. Fast, classy saloons, imports, rally reps etc etc.

I've thought on this before and I'd say anything a bit off the wall but affordable.

I'd also be particularly interested in older affordable cars with a target market of youngsters who've not long passed their test. As a sideline courses in basic car maintenance, (tyre changing/oil and water checking/mechanical principles). In my delusional mind it would mean noob drivers with an interesting car, (rather than the run of the mill Corsa/Clio etc!), and a vested interest in it.

It'd be doomed to failure I know!

I would specialise in sleepers/Q cars. 20 year old Volvos with Chevy V8s, that sort of thing.
