How often man is so inhuman. Will it ever stop? It seems to me not, simply moves to a different part of the world.

Just turned it off. Scenes of someone picking up a dead baby and laying a dead child on a pile of corpses were just too much.

What with this and the Terry Pratchett programme last night there does seem to be quite a lot about unnatural death on the tv recently. Both involve death, yet are poles apart in morality.

Aren't we supposed to be "civilised"?

very interesting ,very depressing-
A Tamil friend of mine told me to give it a watch and though I had heard about what had happened there, it was pretty bloody shocking.
Amazing that there has been virtually no international action on this. The Sri Lankan govt. somehow have managed to avoid any scrutiny.

Hopefully the spotlight will fall on them very soon.- Its a beautiful country - such a shame

They have no oil, or anything we need!

Anyone would think that this sort of thing doesn't happen the world over, day in, day out. For all we crow about the internet and modern technology we still consume a hugely sanitised version of the world. However unpleasant, we need to see more of this to shake us out of our collective indifference. JMHO.

I'll have to watch this as I'm quite involved with Sri Lanka. Is this all in relation to the last push against the Tamil Tigers?

I visited for the first time just after they declared peace and it really is a stunning country and felt totally peaceful to me. I work with a team of guys over there which include Muslims, Christians and Tamils and they all get along really well. I find the place very progressive.

I didn't come across nearly as much resentment between groups as I expected to find, rather a feeling that people just wanted to move on.

what is quite incredible is that the govt and its soldiers are primarily buddhist.
There have been many buddhist monks who became soldiers and and helped to justify the killing on the basis of being under threat from the tamils (which of course they were)-Of course this is not a religious war and people are not being drawn into it through religious recruiting as is being done with islamic terrorism, but it goes to show how
people will kill each other over anything- and if you ask what started it in Sri lanka, many will simply say ethnic differences-really sad.
If you have a read on its history it is the perfect example of how violence breeds violence and little more.

Terrifying, I watched up to the tv presenter then couldn't take much more.

They stand back and let that happen but go into libya without a moments notice, it's a disgrace.

I watched it and neither side came out of it well. It just shows what a thin veneer "civilisation" is.

Just watched this on 4OD.

That quote is exactly what I thought too. How can the UN justify going into Libya with such gusto and self righteousness whilst letting what happened in Sri Lanka effectively pass without comment?

I visited Sri Lanka 3 years ago staying with my good mate from uni who is Sri Lankan, and hung around with the locals (actually went to a house party at the defence minister's house for what its worth). You are right, its an amazing place with amazing people!

And I know about the Tamil situation, but the tragic history doesn't excuse what happened with the seemingly targetted shelling of hospitals and the disgraceful treatment of prisoners.
