Hi,
Northway looked at my Boxster S (Y) at the weekend and there is oil at the back of my engine area, not loads but noticeable. They said it was a 'rear oil seal'

Has anyone had this go on theirs and what are the costs. I have an aftermarket warrently if anyone knows are these things usually covered.
Finally what are the implications of running the car like this for the moment as long as i keep an eye on the oil level the engine wont suddenly explode or anything?!?

Thanks for your help
Simon

keep an eye on the Oil level and you will be fine. Oil seel common on 2.5 and 2.7 litre blocks but less so on the 3.2. All 996 3.4 blocks have this issue. Affecting approx 3% of cars according to a friend of mine in Porsche DE.

Simon, has it got a full history?

If so, you should get Porsche UK to replace it via a goodwill payment.

Mail me for more info, or ask in here, I'm currently going through it.

Cheers,
Greg

3% of cars? Naaaah, miles more than that. My Y reg Boxster S has it as well. I will have it rectified as a good will gesture from Porsche at my next service.

As a member of the Boxster register in the Porsche Club GB I was sent a questionnaire about the rear main seal issue. The club are trying to get a handle on how many Boxsters this is affecting. They hope to take the results to Porsche at some point in the future. Good work I say.

....my 996 has just had a minor service and they noted a leaking/failing rear main seal (RMS) so would be very interested in some feed back re claim. I didn't see this thread when i posted my topic.

You should definitely go for the good will approach and get Porsche to pay up. Just be polite but firm when you go into the OPC. If the monkey isn't giving you what you want, ask to speak to the organ grinder.
