Hi,
Northway looked at my Boxster S (Y) at the weekend and there is oil at the back of my engine area, not loads but noticeable. They said it was a 'rear oil seal'

Has anyone had this go on theirs and what are the costs. I have an aftermarket warrently if anyone knows are these things usually covered.
Finally what are the implications of running the car like this for the moment as long as i keep an eye on the oil level the engine wont suddenly explode or anything?!?

Thanks for your help
Simon

This is commonly called the RMS (rear main seal) fault. Unfortunately very common on the boxster and 996 (same engine, just different sizes). Your after-market warranty may cover it as long as it's not the one sold by the OPCs - that specifically excludes this problem (sneaky b'tds!).

As for driving on it - it's not a big deal, but in the worst cases can foul the clutch plate - which would require a new clutch to correct. Find yourself and independent garage, they can replace the seal for £250-£300.

except yours has gone twice (RMS that is), and both times your ever friendly OPC fixed it free of charge. Nothing to do with buying a Cayenne as well of course !.

Thanks for the help guys, I have done some research and spoke to AFN Guilford who as thought said Porsche would not do it as good will as Im not first owner and didnt buy it from OPC!
£700+ and then VAT... err best have a word with the warrenty place otherwise back to Northways at more than half that cost!

Good luck with all of yours, Porsche must be making a mint off replacing these parts!!!!

for example see

www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog/reports/transport2.shtml

and replace various words with Porsche and RMS
