I was thinking of doing a track day at Silverstone and on their website I see it says 105dB static test, which I should pass but then 102dB on a drive by - what does this mean?

http://www.silverstone.co.uk/track/track-club/

I've been to Oulton Park before with 105dB limit and I juuuuust passed the static after failing first time but also apparently they have sensors round the track which didn't cause me any problems.

I need to get a silencer fitted at some point, but obviously at £300 a day, I don't want to get turned away for being too loud!

I also have a bung I've used to pass sound tests before but I can't leave that in apart from the sighting laps really.

Thanks.

Most cars that pass the static test will be OK on driveby but certain cars with lots of intake noise or weird turbo noises can get caught out.

If you use a bung to get through the static and then take it out then you will very likely fail the driveby and if they suss what you've done you will most likely not get a second chance.

There's pretty well nowhere left that runs limits above 105db on a regular basis so if you want to do trackdays it's time to get that silencer sorted.

Thanks for the reply, yes I think you're right, I passed the 105 at Oulton but surely if it's 102 drive by I'd be quite likely to fail those, as I may be at 8000rpm rather than the 4.5-5 for the static! Are the drive by tests they mention sensors around the track?

Yep, driveby will be all round the circuit and will tend to placed in areas where you are accelerating but they will be a distance away rather than the 0.5m that the static test is done at.

Most cars will get through driveby if they can pass the static, it's designed to be that way but it is there to catch up with the cars that are disproportionately louder when under load compared to static.

They normally tell you the corners with the fly by tests (gernally pit strights) so you can lift past their.

And that's why we get more and more problems with complaining locals.

And I have never heard that at a track day briefing and wouldn't expect to. There may be some discussion on here about the position of drive bys, but you are well advised to ignore those posts and just make sure your car can pass the test.

What do people think is going to happen if complaints about noise and people not sticking to the limits get upheld? All circuits will be like Goodwood.

And lets be honest, the limits set are high enough. How loud do people think 105db actually is?

Everything's going to end up at a piddly 98db and people tricking the drive by will be one of the reasons.

We ran a day at Brands GP last week. Very expensive, days on it are very rare and they have EVIL problems with the locals so it's 101db. All the clients went through the noise test just fine and then... some fool takes out his baffles. Guess what? His car is now VERY LOUD INDEED. Luckily the circuit guys are on the case and got him in before Local Lizzie Lentilist could get on the phone to the council.

Know what his reasoning was? Well, it could easily have fallen out in a race!

FFS. What do you say to that?

Failing a noise test on a track day is just stoopid.

I was driving around Snetterton yesterday in one of the quickest cars there. 88db static.

There is no excuse. Stop being so thick, dumb and in denial about noise. If your gay 'race' car 'won't make proper power without a noisy exhaust' - fk off and do a test day instead.

With some cars it is hard. Gallardos and 458s take work and expense. However, it's usually a tiny proportion of the value of the car.
