I can't get over how cheap Scimiar GTEs are, they appear to be exceptional value for money.
Lightweight body and a 3l V6! I would imagine they get a shift on and get round corners quite well.

So, are they actually st? hehe

A little bit yes... smile

I had a GTC and it was great, bit oily, bit stinky, but ran on rails..

I think it's the reliant bit to be honest...

no scimitars can be very good cars indeed but don't think for a minute that they are lightweight.

Do they handle well? Are they reliable?

Are they cheap for a reason basically?

Well, they're not all that light, and although they have a 3lt V6, they only have about 130bhp.

I do like them, though - but I'd like one with a Cosworth 24v V6.

They are very good cars, fast, handle well etc.

But the chassis rust and being fibreglass can suffer from bad earth to the electric.

Find a good one that's been looked after and you won't be disappointed, find a bad one and it will be a money pit!

If you find a good one they are a very cheap classic but you do need to keep on top of the maintenance.

I've had two and would recommend a 5 rather than a 6 and currently have two SS1's that I'm selling.
I'm only selling as due to health problems I can't look after them.
Both the GTE's and the SS1's are a very under rated car, prices can only go up......I hope!

Much more info/advice to be had at the scimitar web site - http://www.scimitarweb.co.uk/

They have their foibles but they're simple, fast, and provided they're not rusty, very strong. I don't know why they're so cheap really. Really enjoyed ours.

Slight kitcar overtones in the interior, perceptions that they all overheat and dump their coolant, the huge expense(relative to value) of restoring them cosmetically(GRP body), barring Princess Anne getting a ticket in one they don't exist in the motoring folk memory. All of this means they are a bargain for the discerning classic PHer.

They're ok. Chassis still prone to rusting. Electrics not brilliant. Not THAT quick due to lethargic Cologne V6, although tuneable. 29mpg and reasonably practical.

Just not a particularly trendy classic to have tbh therefore a good time to buy one. You can still get most of the parts easily enough and as long as the gel coat is ok, then reasonably good ownership potential.

Scimitars have to be one of the most underrated Classic Cars going...

For the price of a distinctly average MG or TR you could have a concours condition Scimitar...

Folks look at my lovely 1966 GT and cannot believe how little I paid for her.

I wish I had kept mine, fast, very cheap to run and easy to work on. I sprayed mine in a single garage and it came out OK, if you use the right paint and do it at the right time of year in the right place the GRP is not a problem.

Very underated and very cheap, you can get a very good SE5a for the price of a very ropey 3.0 Capri that needs every thing doing. I will get another one one day.

So they're reasonably fast, handle well and not too bad on squirt but the main problems are electrical and the bodywork?

I am tempted to buy one eventually if they stay cheap

Most scimitars are the Essex v6, and there is no chance you will get 29 mpg out of one biggrin

Queensbury Road Garage in Kettering, very much still alive and kicking, they have a good name as far as I am aware.

They have branched out into other marques and models but still specialise in Scimitars, there are always a couple or more in their yard every time I go past there smile

I averaged 25mpg with mine over 2000 miles of mixed driving, it was 3.0 Essex and bw auto box. I think 30mpg would achievable with a manual and overdrive

Fair enough smile I haven't owned a Scimitar myself, but going on the same engine in the same state of tune in a Capri (which is lighter although perhaps shorter geared) which apparently is barely above 20 mpg.

I sold this for £1,200 in 2010, and it has just been sold again apparently. It drove beautifully, onle problems were hot starting issues ( tore my hair out!) and microblistering / osmosis (quite serious and expensive to rectify properly) but in the year or so I had it I had a blast. Everybody seemed to love it too, always getting stopped for a chat. Spares situation is excellent bizzarely, but if I was going to buy another I waould spend £5K+ and get one of the best.

They're about as simple as a car can be, but they're expensive to keep paint on.
