Like many I suspect, I'm finding the need of a 4 door more and more often. But sadly fuel prices (and the general cost of living) mean I really need something a little better on fuel.
These are the options I've come up with so far:
1. Keep my current Jeep 4.0 and LPG it. Only real downer is it's an auto and I prefer manuals.

2. Early Jaguar X-Type 3.0 V6 manual (early as you get the centre LSD instead of an open diff and TCS) and maybe still look at LPG'ing it too.

3. Range Rover p38a DSE manual

4. Rover 2000 P6. No road tax and rock solid depreciation do appeal.

The car will likely be used for 3000-8000 miles a year and will likely be used when needed rather than as a straight daily or weekender. It's the 4 seat (and boot part) that are needed on occasions.

P6 if it were me. When it breaks down it's the joys of classic ownership and more than likely to be a simple fix. When the others break down you need a trained monkey with a laptop to charge £140 an hour to read codes for a weekend then say they can't get the part for two weeks and charge another £140 an hour to fit something you found on eBay within a matter of seconds. The after all that, the "we've swapped all the sensors, recoded the ecu, ran seventeen diagnostic programs but it turned out to be a cracked HT Lead".

Jag for me (although the other options are good too
), must say that jag in red looks gorgeous!, if you bought the jag is that the one you're looking at or is it just lifted from the intergoogle?.
Sadly that's just one from Google, but it is the look/colour I'd try and find. Don't like the chrome on X-Types.

I would say Rover P6 but I think it'll struggle at the mileage, so it's Jaguar for me. P38 would be last, wayyyy too complex and they are all auto anyway so you'd just keep your jeep.
I've driven a manual DSE, although it was many years ago. Did they stop making the manuals earlier on maybe?varsas said:

Whats wrong with a 1.9 TDI?
Get. Out.(j/k, but you really don't know '300' do you)

Yeah a 1.9 TDI really isn't me, nor the type of car you're likely to find one in

The Jeep currently does teens pottering about (although 23mpg on a run). If I could step up to to 25-28mpg average that'd be a huge percentage increase and a lot lighter on the wallet given the modest annual mileage I'd use it for.

This. That said, for the mileage you want it for it's not worth changing from the Jeep IMO unless you fancy a change anyway.Bill said:

I sort of fancy a change. But its more the fuel. I can justify running a V8, but multiple low mpg cars it far more of a challenge these days.I'm not 100% sure, but was it only 2 years back that unleaded was 88-90p/litre. Today it's nearly £1.40 and sadly I don't actually have any more money a month for fuel now than I did then, well not 50% more at any rate. Putting £10 of petrol in the Jeep at the weekend is not even worth the effort of driving to petrol station any longer.
But jumping from 14-16mpg to something offering 25-30mpg would sort of reinstate the same level of pence per mile ratio I was paying only a few years back and bring running cost back in budget. As it currently stands I find I'm using the Jeep about half as much as I'd like too... and it's all down to fuel and keeping my monthly books/bank acc in check.

A sad state of affairs. Get the Jag.I'd either lpg the Jeep (sensible thing) or get a P6. Despite what some naysayers may er.. say, it'll easily handle the mileage. And plenty of manuals about. I'd consider a 2200 as they run on unleaded and have a bit more torque. TC would be nice but they can crack the exhaust manifolds so check that if you look at one. Just check thoroughly for rust!

If you bought a P6 though, wouldn't you get fed up with the pace, even though it'll return the economy, and want to V8 it? I know i would.
Maybe. Although I think it'd be interesting and fun enough that it wouldn't worry me too much. I fully understand what you are saying, as I wouldn't for one second consider a 2.1 litre X-Type. But a wafty old classic sort of appeals on a different level.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
