Im looking for a watch that I can wear for every day wear and for the odd occasion night out...

I dont mind if its brand new or decades old, it just needs to be:

Robust
Full metal bracelet
Mechanical
Chronograph if possible.
dont really like the cyclops so without if possible.
Would like a display case at the back to see the mechanical aspect as there is not point having it unless it can be seen.
No gold/digital/bling.

So what kind of watch am I looking at?

Obviously a Rolex/Omega is going to be quite high up there, but Im not sure of the individual models or all those unknown gems...

Do watches lose much value? Would it be better to go for an older 2nd hand model so that it keeps its value or goes up?

Thanks for any help

Most new watches will lose value, Rolex will hold value better but doesn't tick your boxes.
Pre-owned will hold value much better and you have a wider choice.

Personally, I'd be looking at Sinn or Guinand, I say Guinand as they offer a display back and almost unique gilt ETA movement. They come in much cheaper than your budget and perhaps the gilt isn't to your taste, so I'd say have a look at the Sinn 103 Diapal, there are s/steel or anti-bling Ti case versions and also a UTC option (discrete) so should cover all bases.

S/Steel - http://forums.watchuseek.com/f24/new-sinn-103-st-d...

Ti - http://www.chrono24.com/en/sinn/103-ti-diapal-klas...

(Both with a count-down bezel).

If you can live without a date and with manual wind (not really a hassle at all) then I'd go for an Omega Speedmaster Pro, display back. You'd need to buy used, but it will hold it's money like few others if bought right.

The sinn looks nice and does fit the requirements, how is the brand reputation known?

Whilst its a good watch am I going to be looking at something worth less than £1k after a year or is it a bit like the Rolex and it holds the value quite well?

What about any older watches?

Im quite happy to drop the display back or the cyclops and live with them if I can tick most of the boxes.

Any of these truely water proof or Im guessing I should leave that to the Suunto D9 Im trying to get my hands on at the moment as salt and expensive watch = poorly watch?

Sinn have a very good reputation, it's worth spending a bit of time reading up on them. As to value, I should think that the ones I've linked to should hold 60-70% of value over the long term.

If holding value is important and you're willing to forego the cyclops/display back then have a look at a pre-owned Rolex Submariner, there are a few here who know them better than I do but I think they are probably over the top end of your budget, and as with all easy choices, can be a little ubiquitous - whether that's of concern or not is down to personal choice of course. All that aside they are very good watches in themselves.

The Sinn is 20bar/200m w/r, and features a desiccant capsule that indicates if moisture is present as well as eliminating fogging. I'd have no concerns with anything above normal scuba depths.

The Speedmaster is rated at 3bar/30m, so I would be wary of swimming with one, nice though it is.
