Morning All.

I have donned my nomex suit already so feel free to ridicule me....

Quite simply, I need to buy some (hopefully) ready-made curtains.
The window which is necessistating my starting this thread is actually a set of UPVC doors which are large, probably about 3 metres across in total.

The existing curtain rail is even wider still, probably 3.5 metres...

I have been perusing the websites of some curtain purveyors and I cannot find any curtains which are big enough - the biggest is 229cm x 229cm.

So, here's the stupid question. when I see 'a pair' of curtains advertised as being 229cm x 229cm, is this 'together' or each?? That it to say, will this pair of curtains actaully be suitable for a window which is 458cm?

I'm convinced it must be the total, that is to say the combined width of the two, but does this mean I need specially made curtains?

Please begin the merciless pi$$ taking...

Thanks Nick.

It'll be the together measurement, unless stated its per curtain (Not Pair of curtains)

I only know this because I had exactly the same problem a few months ago, but the width quoted is for each curtain. Unless you want the curtain stretched tight across the window when closed, you have to allow extra width, so for a 3m window you need a total width of curtains of between 4 and 4.5m (approx 1.5 x the width of the window) so the quoted width on the packet needs to be between 200cm and 225cm ideally. Does your head hurt yet?

I can't believe I'm answering this but my late Mum used to make curtains for a living so I picked up a bit of knowledge

The sizes you see will be each curtain and generally you're looking for one and half as a minimum but preferably double the width of the window. So if your doors are 3 metres wide, ideally you want 2 curtains each 3 metres wide or maybe a little smaller but they'll look stretched when they're closed and will lack fullness. Hence ideally double width.

IIRC curtain material is typically 54 inches wide (135cm) so you'll find it hard to get curtains 3 metres wide in which case you've got two choices. Buy four curtains and join them together or buy four curtains and don't join them together, just pull them closed one at a time. Though that looks a bit bodged as if you couldn't be bothered to sew them together. Actually at 135 each, four curtains works out as a good width for your doors i.e. each pair comes out at 2700. You could have a look in IKEA they've got some keenly priced curtains or of course every homemakers favourite place, John Lewis.

IKEA's curtains typically each come out at 145 wide so a pair joined together works fine.

So you just need two pairs. As regards joining them and hemming them to length, if you haven't got a sewing machine or the skill to do it and don't know anyone who can do it for you, again IKEA do a self adhesive heat activated tape that you iron on. So lay the curtains out on the carpet and overlap one over t'other by half an inch (oops I mean 15mm) making sure you match the pattern. Then just iron the join and hey presto as if by magic the curtains joined. OK it's not a perfect solution but for a bloke it'll do. Just be a bit careful when you're opening and closing the curtains and be prepared to replace the tape when (ha ha, he means if) you wash the curtains. Oh and same deal of course for the length.

For your interest I recently did exactly this for a flat I'm renting in Hamburg and it looks really good. Don't you just love IKEA?

Have you tried http://www.elmetcurtains.co.uk/curtains/?

We purchased our living room curtains off them for a window that is3.8m wide.
Price was £137, delivered, with some matching cushion covers, way better than the £1200 quote my wife got from the local furnishing shop.

My wife is just thinking of going into the curtain making business.... she's an absolute dab hand at all things sewing and has recently come runner-up in a national competition. She's a perfectionist (other than marrying me of course).

I would imagine she'd love a first commission!
