local bike club is going to do a trip round the isle of wight in september. mixed abilities to say the least... i understand the island is surprisingly lumpy and windy. is it best to go clockwise or anticlockwise? any other points to consider? i know it's only 70 miles or thereabouts and normally i wouldn't bother asking questions but there are a few saga cyclists coming as well so need to make sure we don't 'lose' any on the way...

Have a look here for details of the Randonee www.cycleisland.co.uk You've missed it this year but the route is permanently marked with blue or white signs depending whether you go CW or ACW. I did it this year ACW for the first time and found it harder than going CW. Still a classic ride though.

Did it a few years ago, but didn't know about the marked route. (Just kept the sea on my right.)

Nominally, you start and finish at the same place, what goes up must come down, and the wind will get you no matter what, as it's a loop, but...

In reality, the bit from the West to the South, along the old Military Road I think, is the most exposed. Have a look at prevailing winds, and try to have it on your back for that section.

I'd like to get back to do it again sometime now...
