Hi I am thinking about buying a pre owned rolex gmt. The ones with the blue/red bezel have grown on me. I know little about them, are there some ages better than others eg 80's vs 90's manufactured.

I am not looking for watch investment but am looking for a watch which wont lose too much value. I was hoping to pick up a clean original example with box and papers for 3k or hopefully a bit less, is this realistic?.

I would be very grateful for any information or links to further information.

Thanks in advance.

Fundamentally the GMT 2 hasn't changed from the early 80's till the recent introduction of the ceramic model. So all you have to decide is how aged you want the watch to be as to wether you buy an example from the 80's or early 00's.
I think £3k is about right for a private sale/eBay but a dealer would try and get you to part with >£3.5k.
As you have said box & papers are pretty important (unless you reflect this in the price) and a quick check with the Rolex lost and stolen register before buying is a good idea.
Good luck with the search.

This is a good buy and probably the only reason it has not sold is the lack of box etc. You can get boxes on FleeceBay if you really want one.
The bezels are easy to change and I have a genuine Rolex blue/red if you want one.

At £2750 I think it's too high. Spend a couple of hundred more and find another with the B&P. They're a great watch, so pay a little more and buy one that will be so much easier to move when you come to sell it.

You think that's too high for a non-B&P example Dom?
I doubt you'd see one much cheaper!

I do admit the price is attractive, but the 'I'm pretty sure it's genuine' attitude from the seller is, frankly, off putting.

In all fairness, every seller on there assumes that, but just doesn't put it in words.
The Submariner I just sold, I would have never known that was genuine had I not removed the caseback. For any watch without service history or papers, that is always the case.

It looked a good deal, but I don't really like glossy dial Rolexs and I think I prefer acrylic crystals as well (unless I was going to use a Submariner/SD for the intended job!).

I think if the OP had offered a bit less he may well have bought it? It's sold now so it's a bit elementary.

Full set ones seem to be going for around £3k ish

Thanks for all the input. I must admit I am most keen to buy that rare watch ie the one really fastidious owner who has hardly worn it and kept everything including the reciept and plastic bezel guard! (like me)
The search begins.

Does look good but I am currently watching the 2005 one on fleabay, box and papers and a recent service.
However pictures are poor so cannot really see condition. Still the hunt is part of the fun for me!

One of these is my daily wearer and I love it. Couldn't bond with the submariner so swapped it for a GMT via TZ.

They are quite rare I think and don't look as obvious to a non watch officianado.

They crop up quite regularly on TZ. Mine is from 67 ish I think although not all original.
