so my NA mx5 has distributed locking (ie doesn't have central locking). if my passenger locks the door when its open, it comes unlocked again as its shut - so I have to sit in the car and wait till they've shut the door, then reach across and lock that door, then clamber out of the car and lock my door. Argh! is there an easier way?

Oh yes, the passenger:

- opens the door
- gets out
- clicks the switch to lock it
- closes the door holding the exterior handle open

hope it makes sense!

Yup, hold handle open while shutting and it stays locked.

Same as just about every other car I've ever come across!

none of my parent's cars growing up had central locking - but in the same stroke, none of them unlocked the door when you shut it, save for the drivers door. My gf's ka doesn't do this, and my previous volvo 300s didn't do it either - in fact its *only* my mx5 i've come across that does it..

Every car I've ever had does this whether it had central locking or not. I thought that was just a standard thing with all door mechanisms.
