The problem with diesels is less the turbo and more the inertia of the heavy flywheel needed to overcome the high compression ratio. That's the reason they feel a bit heavy and sluggish when you're trying to flip quickly between the lower gears. Diesels are far better suited to automatic gearboxes as they mask this unpleasantness very effectively.
Don't most diesels limit the boost provided by the turbo in 1st gear?
Either way, not really the way to make progress in them, ideally get out of 1st and into the upper gears as quickly as possible. In your particular case, though, driving that car that way isn't really something it was designed for!

It goes pretty well I must say. All wheel drift at roundabouts because it's a little high. My driving won't break the engine: never rev over 4K.Getting from 1st to 2nd asap works a treat BTW.
