Xbox 360 wheel info - Help me out.

Hi chaps, I know this has probably been done to death so I'll be as brief as I can with my queries.
I love FM3 and I'm ok at it. In the top 300 on most tracks (F class) and my tunes are ok, although some people still just drive away from me!
I've never had a wheel and some people tell me I WILL knock time off my best laps with one. I don't want to spend loads, even though I love the look of the Fanatec Porsche one so :-
1) Should I get one?
2) Are the cheap ones pants - Xbox one, Madcatz, etc?
3) How does manual with clutch work? I currently have the clutch as A button so I can roll on and off B button (Up change) and X button (Down change).
4) I'm not going to be on Xbox much til FM4 comes out now, as I'm mega busy in the summer but, I want to get on every so often in preperation for FM4, especially if I have to learn a new wheel, etc but, with FM4 going to be Konnect compatible, should I even bother with a wheel?
Any help would be really appreciated. I missed the boat with FM3 really. I bought it the day of it's release along with a 12 month Xbox Live membership. I cocked up the Live thing though (made a new profile instead of joining it with my existing profile so had to ring Xbox and get talked through things, Doh!), so by the time I learned my way around xbox live and then learnt FM3, tuning etc. I was always going to find it hard. I'm trying to avoid this with FM4.

I've had a play on my mates wheel (no space for me to get one) But if anything i was slower with it, manual with clutch helps loads with getting away from people. On the wheel you still use the 'A' button as a clutch so its not ideal (not sure about changing the configurations) but if you can afford it get the official xbox one would be my advice. Should be plenty on ebay for not too much, or look in game etc they might have some pre-owned or with damage to the box which they are shifting cheaper.
If anything practice is your friend. If they are walking away from you might be their tune being slightly better or them taking a better line through the corner and coming out with more speed.

Original Poster - Yep, I think I know deep down that it's like most things in life. You get what you pay for. That's the reason I'm after some feedback really. It's catch 22 though, as if I get a cheap wheel and get to grips with it, then I'll wish I'd bought the good one in the first place. However, if I buy the Fanatec one and dislike it, I'll lose a bit. I think Nics suggestion of going second hand with the Xbox one is a good idea. I can then sell it on for a minimal loss either way. Not that we're talking about huge figures anyway.
Nic - Thanks for the info. Good stuff. I think, as mentioned above, a s/hand Xbox wheel will be a good start. I'd heard a few things about too much play in them though but, I'm sure I'll at least know if I like one by trying even a basic one.
With regards to Forza3. I got upto champion status (although that means nothing to me, as I'm not a rank jockey! ) and like I say I'm in the top 300 on most tracks for F class, which is my favourite class. All this is with my own tunes. I've bought dozens of other peoples tunes for cars and just can't drive them. Yet the Veterans and Legends can beat me.
One main problem I have is that I like to set my final drive to almost full acceleration. Obviously I then struggle top end to keep up with some people. Yet if I set my final drive more towards top speed, I don't seem to see higher speeds
. Plus there is then the downside of the car not feeling as good at downshifts when engine breaking, when set towards top speed.
I also don't like how lethargic the car sounds when accelerating with the box set towards speed rather than acceleration.
I've literally spent hours and hours tuning things. I always use F class cars on Mugello Club, as I know my best time around here is 107.05 in a Golf MK2 or 106.7 in my Porsche 550.
I'll get a wheel and get back on soon anyway. Cheers.

The problem with getting a cheaper wheel over a Fanatec is the whole experience, you may hate the xbox wheel but love using a fanatic as they are that much better in terms of quality and experience.

Am I correct in thinking the wheel and pedals are sold seperately? I've seen some Fanatec GT2 wheels for sale with no mention of the pedals.
Also, as my 1st post, do you have to press a button on the wheel to dip the clutch, as you also move the stick to change up/down? (I'm sure I could get used to this anyway).
And finally, did it knock any time off your laptimes? Or were you still getting quicker anyway.
I'm at a stage on FM3 where I know my quickest possible time around Mugello Club. If I went on there and done a lap that was say 0.5-1 second quicker, then I'd know it was the wheel and not just a flukey fast lap.
I've watched several youtube vids of the Fanatec and is does look good. It also appeals as I have a PS3 as well and it's compatible with both, which is a bonus.

The MS wheel certainly isn't the best out there but it does the job just fine for me. Fanatecs are nice but people have had a lot issues with them. If money wasn't tight I'd consider a Fanatec but as is I'd rather put the hundreds of pounds into an actual car or fuel/insurance/trackday etc rather than pretend to drive a car.

Up until FM3 I hadn't done any real gaming since I was maybe 16-17, so 16 years ago! I got hooked on Forza and played it A LOT until this winter.
The cost of the Fanatec does seem high though for someone who is, at the end of the day, a casual gamer. So, I will be weighing it up. I just like to do the job right if I'm going to do it. I could buy a MS one soon but, would find it hard to justify the Fanatec one in the immediate future but, I've got a few months until FM4 .
