Renault laguna knocking noise

Hello all.
looking for a little help, my neighbour has a 2005 Laguna 1.9dci, it has had a knocking noise for about a month now. it sounds like engine wear, but the confusing part is at tickover there is no noise. and even more confusing the noise can only be heard inside the car when driving. i have sttod at the side of the road whilst he drives the car past at various speeds and in various gears and it sounds no different than any other diesel.
i have used a screwdriver to listen to the engine and there does not seem to be any localised knock, the engine runs and revs very freely. No loss of power and no smoke. engine temp is normal. clutch and dmf renewed 12000 miles ago
so i am thinking along the lines of worn engine or gearbox mounts, maybe exhaust mounts. if anyone else has had this similar problem any pointers would be appreciated

I would be interested in the outcome of this one my brother has a similar noise on his laguna, the garage want to replace the gearbox at £900.00. but i am thinking more along the lnes of bushes on the engine subframe or even engine mounts. but if someone has cured this knowing which bush or mount to replace would be a head start for me.

If he's got the 'NAV' option, it may well just be the noise of his fist, thumping the dashboard repeatedly, in an attempt to get the cheeky french Sat Nav to either work, shut up, or just let you change the radio settings (same screen).
Engine mounts would be my guess if from the front. My '07 plate one appears to be screwed together with, well, very little. Having said that I've put over 20K miles on it this year and nothing too large has dropped off yet.. (including the DMF*)

- Clearly I reserve the right to rant about shoddy french cars when the DMF does decide to fail, probably on the way home this evening.
Hi, taken the Laguna out for a drive this evening. just to satisfy myself that there is no problems with power and gears. tried turning tight corners to see if the noise could be CV joints, but that is not the case. when we returned after half an hour jacked up and supported the car, removed the under engine shield and checked all fixings of the subframe and no securing bolts were loose..
checked all gear linkages, then had an assistant start the engine engage first gear and spin the wheels so i could listen to the gearbox. where the bottom mounts are. there does seem to be a slight rattling noise coming from the exhaust but not consistant with the noise frequency from inside the car.
lowered the car to the ground again, then put in gear and rocked the car front and rear. and there is no excessive movement in the upper mounts, but with the car on the ground the bottom mounts could not be checked. so now looking for ideas of which bottom mounts are most likely to be damaged. as to buy all of them is going to be about £200 have looked for a download of a service/repair manual but as yet nothing has come up. again i am open to comments and any help offered would be appreciated
