Cleaning a 993 Engine and Bay
Discussion
i would use gunk or an engine degreaser on a rag, wash down by hand...
I would not use a hose as it could get into the ignition system or electrics,,with 2x dizzy & 12x plugs & leads it could take a while to trace any water induced misfire.
probably a good idea to remove under trays at this point so you don't end up holding a bucketful under the car. Good luck and don't be over enthusiastic.

Club' Thanks for that sensible advice. I don't mind having a go at the undertray, is it a follow your nose exercise or would one have to be 'a mechanic'?

easy,,jack it up secure with axle stands and there are i think 5 turnlock keyscrews you turn with a screw driver, the engine one comes off and the rear gearbox /starter motor tray stays where it is, it takes a ciuple of minutes to take off, in fact less time than jacking the thing up!
Replace is just position in place and turn the keys until it holds.

I wouldnt use any sort of power washer on a 911............can cause the dash to look like a christmas tree, there will be so many lights on if water gets in to the electricals.
I think i will take that advice.
on a similar topic, and while your feeling generous...

To get rid of the 'dirt haze' use a clay bar. My 993tt had dirt from some kind of fallout since it was standing for a couple of months before I bought it. Using the clay bar, revealed how much dark brown filth was on my arctic silver paintwork. After that I use the Zymöl products and it came out very nice indeed.

'Silver thanks for that advice, I have some Klay Bar, bit as you probably know, it's not a large bar they sell you, and the car is a large overall surface area, so..., the question is how do i use it for this type of application. I have just used it in the past for picking of bit's of tar.
A small piece of clay goes a long way. I think that 100gm bar did my whole car with a fair bit left over. Remember when the clay surface gets brown or discoloured to fold it in half, stretch it a bit and continue using. You can do this many times with one small piece of clay. After that's done, use the HD-cleans (or equivalent) and then the wax.

'Silver. Thanks for that, but i think i still havn't explained very well. I really meant to say, how do you actually use it?, I have only ever used it for 'picking' tiny bits of tar. Do you use it (lightly) like say, a cloth?, big strokes or small one's?, i'm just a little paranoid about it's abrasive qualities...
You need a lubricant to use it. You can use the normal mix of car shampoo with water. Alternatively, something like Meguire's Detailer can be used (comes in spray bottle). Best to spray it on or simply soak a cloth in the shampoo/water mix, wet the painted area to be cleaned and then rub the clay (squashed into a small pad the size of a matchbox)on the paintwork. you can use a bit of pressure. You may feel a rough sensation at first but that's ok, it means you've found the dirt!. Keep rubbing (and use more lubricant if necessary) until you don't feel any more resistance. Take a look at the bottom of the clay. If it looks quite dirty, fold it, stretch it out again and repeat. Try areas of about 1 sq foot at a time. Remember to keep the lubrication going. You can't really over lubricate.
Always remember first to wash the area to be clayed.

Which brand did you use?
I dont use any Zymol product down to the cost of it more than anything, and the time it takes to use it properly.............
To get rid of haze I use 3M compound either by hand for a small area, or with a machine polisher for the whole car.........it works particually well for dark coloured cars.......however word of warning.if you havnt used a "buffer" before ( machine polisher) dont get stuck into your hundred grand Porsche first go...its easy to go thru the paint on edges and create buffer burn, practice on the wifes fiesta first!!
