I had the same problem with the front tyres. I e-mailed my insurer (Mannings) and they OK'd the lower speed rating. Nice to have it in writing.

Surely if you were in an accident and the insurance company were trying to get out of paying, you could argue that the speed limit is 70MPH and therefore a V rated tyre is ample for road legal speeds! Just a thought!

It was explained to me that although the legal limit is seventy a powerful car such as the Griff can put enormous load through the tyre getting to that speed. Main thing is, get the permission in writing, not over the 'phone.

I'd argue that their explanation only applies to the rear tyres, as when you're accelerating hard the front tyres are hardly loaded at all. And you're dead right about getting it in writing - absolutely essential.

Manning include some track day cover (£1K excess), so potentially you could exceed the speed rating of the front tyres within the bounds of their cover.

I'm just about to renew my Griff insurance with them and notify that I've put a set of SP12 alloys on (17 front 18 rear)with T1-R's at the correct/high enough speed rating...be interesting to see if they want to increase my premium for non std wheels.

Edit to add...no increase for the SP12's v estorils. Though renewal was slightly higher than last year.
