AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix, Nurburgring
Discussion
Has anyone done this event or is going this year?
I've never been before, but me and some friends thought it would make a nice change from Le Mans. If it's any good we will probably alternate between this and Le Man Classic.
So just wondering if anyone had gone in the past or knew much about it? We are very much going into this blind as it were...

Yes, it's a great event. It's run on the same basis as the Le Mans Classic i.e. with access to the Paddocks so you can get very close to the cars. Unlike LMC you can access all areas (GA, seats & Paddocks) with 1 ticket.
To me there are a couple of major differences between LMC & the Oldtimer...
- LMC is only for GT cars with a previous connection to racing at LM but the Oldtimer covers a wider selection of cars from pre-war, GT's, Touring cars, Grand Pric cars, etc
- I love the fact that at the Nurburgring you can walk around the circuit but sadly as you'll know at LM a lot of it is made of public roads so you can only watch the racing from limited areas
- LMC has racing for a full 24hrs, the Oldtimer does not race through the night. However the Oldtimer does have classic GT racing until 21.30 on the Saturday night so you do get to see a bit of "after dark" racing.
- The Oldtimer is not as popular with the Brits as LMC although there will be more there than normal this year with large groups going from the Jag club (the event organisers are doing some extra things to mark their 50th anniv) and the TVRCC.
One BIG draw to the Oldtimer for me is the spectacle of huge grids of classic GT & Touring cars racing on the full lap of the combined Northloop and GP circuit on the Friday.
If you want any extra info feel free to drop me an email.
Cheers,
Longers

Fantastic event and i prefered it to the Le Mans Classic tbh as the racing was more varied and the viewing spots and grandstands were great and not too busy. The friday endurance race on the full circuit was awesome as were the historic GP cars and old F1 cars. The campsite was good and backed right on to the circuit with food and drink outlets all over and virtually no queues. Smaller than Le Mans but i kinda liked that as there was no pressure to try and see everything. Another vote for Longers here as well, organised us track laps, photo shot on the start grid etc etc....Awesome weekend.
