Officially official: BMW Reveals M5 Spec. Official

BMW opens the internet floodgates with full tech spec of its new super-saloon

Yesterday we showed you the official photos of the new M5. Today - and unexpectedly early - we can finally bring you full official details of the new M car.

As expected, the M5 develops 552bhp and 502lb ft from its twin-scroll twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8, while power heads to the rear wheels via a seven-speed twin-clutch DCT transmission.

BMW reckons its fifth-generation M5 can post some pretty impressive performance figures, too. It can hit 62mph from rest in 4.4secs, 124mph in 13.0secs, and a still-limited 190mph flat out (with the optional M Driver's package).

Equally impressive is fuel consumption that's been cut by 30 per cent (meaning 28.5mpg on the official combined cycle) despite power that's up by 10 per cent and torque that's up by 30 per cent.

That is a very odd looking power curve - it's perfectly flat for the top 1500rpm of the rev range. I'd be fascinated to know what it feels like as it crosses 5700rpm.

Surely point to point 'in the real world' this would give the E60 (V10) M5 a spanking.

Styling is a lot more subtle (i.e. traditional M5 like) than the E60 too. Me likey.

Edit to add, 6 pots front and rear! Nice to see BMW finally taking their brakes seriously.

Liking the look of it (not too agressive), the interior and the fact that they have fitted decent anchors. Although not sure those look like 6 pot rears?!

Also impressive torque figure... Seems like they are responding to criticism of the old V10's delivery, as well as to rivals like the XFR/E63.

To save the blushes of the transmission supplier. Torque and power appear capped by ZF.

How can you say that, I guess you cant please some people. To me it is a major improvement on the current 5 series, even on looks. Only downside I guess is there isnt a manual gearbox option.

This looks like Bentley type performance, huge torque at low rpm, effortless performance at low rpm, etc, etc. Fine, but M Power?

I am not remotely interested.

I prefer the Jaguar XFR and the Cadillac CTS-V anyway.
Perhaps not so refined but not so bloody mainstream and much nicer to look at.
