Seen a lovely R Design Sport, perfect colour on an '08 plate, so it has the nicer facelift front end. Its the 2.0d with 72k on the clock, full Volvo Service History up to 61k, one owner (i would guess maybe fleet or company with that mileage).

Any thoughts? Look a nice car, without looking too big like a 5-series estate or similar.

I drive a fast petrol at the moment, so im a bit aprehensive about dropping to a 2.0d, however i've been offered a fairly decent trade-in price for mine.

The car itself is up at £10.5k

I really like ours (newer version with the D4 engine - 2.0d 177PS). The R-Design interior is a great place to sit, the car drives OK and is suitably anonymous wink We had a C30 with the older 2.0d engine and it wasn't as efficient as I'd hoped around town but good on longer runs.

I had a 58 plate D5 V50 for 2 years. Seats, stereo and interior great! D5 was great, cant vouch for the 2.0. Handling was poor, ride was good. Smaller car than you think.

I would rate it 7/10

Not fancy the T5 R-Design then if you are coming from a "fast petrol" ? Got one myself and like it a lot. I test drove the 2.0 (as the stealer didn't have the T5 in stock), and it was pretty nice to be honest. The R-design is a nice finish, and very comfy. Very reliable though, don't even have a squeek in mine after doing 13000 miles.

As said already, it's smaller in the boot than you think. I did come from Impreza's, so it was an improvement on what we had, but still small compared to other estates.

I dont mind it being small, if anything, im after a smaller estate. My other option was a three series but its much extra cash for one of them.

I considered the D5, but the performance figures between the d5 and 2.0d seem marginal. Im also on a bit of an economy drive now, so a T5 might put the knackers on that one. Im just putting a bit too much fuel in my petty at the moment. biggrin

Just to add- I chipped the D5 to 205bhp and it sounds GLORIOUS! (for a diesel) You get the near proper 5 cyl growl that made the car for me.

if i remember correctly at that mileage if its a euro 4 the 72k service costs approx £1000 as the particulate filter requires replacing.

also check the clutch/flywheel seems ok and not making any nasty noises.

Apart from the general caution about going from petrol to a diseasel, I'd generally recommend a V50. There's probably another discussion to be had about making sure that the business case for changing a car is real (many people overlook depreciation and financing costs).

The V50 isa refreshing break from the German alternatives and considerably more comfortable in my experience. I took a good look around new V50s with my parents recently and although they ended up with a V70, I'd recommend a V50 unless you really need something bigger.

I've had mine for 3 months and am still pleased everytime I get in how refreshing the interior is compared to the gloom that seems to come with every other car. Also the clarity and simplicity of the controls is a bonus.

Have used my old Merc C220 for the last week (Parents took the Ovlov on holiday) the efficiency of the D4 is even impressive, about an extra 5mpg.

The only negatives I have found is is the constant road noise and under acceleration the steering betrays which axle is steered. So I'm having to remind myself to accelerate after pulling out of junctions.
