Q Car Bargains

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the PH website, so go easy on me guys!!

Me and my friend were discussing 'which q car?'. We discussed the usual BMW and Audi candidates and then i got to thinking about potential VAG group cars like the Seat Exeo. It cetainly fits the bill as it looks elegant and quite understated, however with the 2.0 turbo four under the bonnet its certainly no slouch, I'm sure even a stage one remap would provide an even bigger buzz. The classifieds dont seem to be overflowing with the 2.0 TSI Sport variant, but I'm suure in a few years these cars will represent a veritable bargain.

What are your thoughts, I'm sure there are many alternatives available at present. Future depreciation on the Seat is likely to be high, resulting in a 'have your cake and eat it' quasi-performance saloon, especially a high spec example.

Thoughts please?

Thoughts? Is this an ad? As your first attempt seems to have gone. Apologies if I'm wrong, but this seems a sort of cryptic attempt to get people to check the classifieds for the car you've just mentioned?

I reckon a Phaeton W12 would fit the bill, and perhaps the turbocharged Volvos (T4, T5) if they still actually make them.

My original post on this topic was removed because of an PH advert added to the post (my error) - a genuine discussion, would like to get some opinion - lets see if we can decide which is the ultimate 'q car!'

Most factory stuff isnt a true Q car or sleeper, a last gen Audi A4 with 200 bhp isnt a Q car at all really as it is a modern, smart saloon and it will go, give or take, how it looks.

The factors are


Age, Image, price, reputation

vs

Actual power, looks, how well the extra power is hidden.


So a true Q car needs to look unassuming with not much in the way of evidence, preferably based on a plain looking version of the base car, add in that it should look a bit plain but have uprated everything then you are on your way.

to continue the Audi theme an Audi RS4 is no way a Q car but a scruffy 1995 A4 "1.9 tdi" in flat blue with plastic hubcaps and a 500 bhp 1.8T engine and 4wd drivetrain absolutely is, it may be a little lower, for handling but not cosmetics, the wheels may be wider steels for the extra grip, not the looks, hopefully it shouldnt be any louder at normal speeds and shoudlnt have a drainpipe exhaust, perhaps even a few cunning clues to complete the ruse, a few stickers from tourist attractions (not the Nurburgring), cushion on the rear shelf etc.

Also, can I just point out, if I was selling the car from the ad, I would hardly advise - as in my original post - that 'in a few years, this car will be a bargain', which implies that the current price is too high. I also mentioned high depreciation. If this was my sales technique (if I was selling a car, which I'm not) then it would surely be ridiculous to mention high depreciation.

Yes, but we are used to the occasional slightly mental sounding first post, people are used to me now so anything goes you are now sounding normal and answering what we were finding strange about the first post.

I actually saw my first Exeo on Monday, couldn't work out if it shared the A4 floorplan or not?
Fairly dreary looking thing if you ask me, but can understand the op's point when it comes to vfm in a few years time!
Very solid and very reliable I imagine.

Does anybody actually own one or experienced a test drive?

Same(ish) engine as used in other, much faster Volvos and Focus ST & RS. A cheeky remap, some less-squashy squashy bits and you might have something not too shabby.
Especially as 99% of people will think you like tartan knee blankets, pipes and slippers.

Saab 95 Aero like the one I drive. Take the Aero badge off and no-one would be able to tell it from the diesel.

Quite funny giving chavs a shock as the Aero badge wouldn't even register with them unlike an RS an M badge.
