Hi guys!

Currently planning a short road trip over to France for mid August with a few mates.
Thinkig of heading down to Calais using the Euro Tunnel, and then heading down to the Dijon area..but no final destination set in mind yet to be fair!
Was just wondering if any of you had any suggestions of good places to visit (rule out Monaco etc, not a millionnaire yet) whilst using the most of the scenic routes and avoiding tolls, as I have heard they can be quite pricey!

Cheers cool

Doing Calais to Dijon would be perfect for a stop off at the disused Reims circuit. From there, take the D396 and D996 through to Dijon, I did this route a few weeks back but in the other direction. The D396 was almost perfectly straight without another car in sight for miles, whereas the D996 was a twisty section through a forest with a few hairpins thrown in and just as quiet. Both really impressed.

I don't know quite how far you're thinking of going, but certainly don't rule out Monaco on grounds of it being expensive. We parked in a multistorey which was about 12 euros for the day and had a McDonalds for lunch, nice and cheap. It's certainly worth a visit, just to have a walk round and do the obligatory lap. We stopped in an F1 hotel just the other side of Nice, 20 minutes away, which although basic cost us about £30 for the night smile

No problem, if it helps I drew up this map when I got back which has the route between Dijon and Reims. The 30 mile stretch to the south of Dijon was a nice surprise too, the D974, again hardly used and very picturesque and a nice flowing road along the side of a canal.

One thing about travelling through France that I've seen someone say on here is to plan the route using a ruler - you end up with a straight through route, avoiding tolls and usually finding some interesting roads along the way biggrin

Hey guys! That is a meaty looking lap, how long did it take you to do that? I'm not planning anything of that sort of size but definitely a great help route wise biggrin Change of plan as to means of getting to France, the ferry to Dunkirk is a lot cheaper than the chunnel, even if it does take longer but hey ho. Definitely a lot planning to do, cant wait to post a thread on here once i've completed a road trip of some sort!!

We did that over seven days, which was pushing it a bit, especially on the way back through France. We went a long way out of the way to cross the Millau Viaduct, which was great to see but probably not worth the massive detour!

Fair enough mate, but if you can-why not! What were the costs like for the whole journey? Reasonable?

Read Mikey K's road trip write up the other day. Probably a bit further than you want to go but worth a look all the same

The Carrefour supermarket at Calais gives their
fuel price online

http://www.carrefour-calais.com/modulosite2/our-pr...

GBP 1.38 for unleaded and GBP 1.21 for diesel.

Of course, you will pay more at ordinary fuel
stations and on the motorway, just like the UK.

Any idea of the total fuel bill for such a trip in an average car?

Returned yesterday from 2600 mile France/Italy trip. I averaged about E1.53 per litre and was buying from Supermarkets, Autoroutes and N Road fuel stations. A word of warning, quite few of the 24hr unmanned non-autoroute service stations refused my UK mastercard and visa. So either carry plenty of Euros or buy from manned service stations.

Check your route on Google Maps before you go, they have modifed the roads around Reims and if gets a bit confusing. Most Sat Nav's do not have the update yet

Go via a Champagne house and buy some vintage at around 16euro a bottle

Pierre Boever is where James May and Oz Clark went (PB's Bastien Thomas is my fav rather than the Vintage), but please take the time to listen to them explain and of course don't take the free sample drinks and not buy anything ... I bought a few cases in January wink

Champagne Pierre Boever. 10 RUE MICHEL LE TELLIER 51150 Louvois

My TomTom coped fine last month, I updated it before I left but I didn't find anything out of the ordinary around there smile We came across a closed road north of Reims, but a 15 minute detour found us back in the right direction.

Can we have some details of your route please?

Doh.

It's about 360 miles from Calais to Dijon.

At 30 mpg and £1.40 a litre, that's about £150 for the
return trip in petrol.

At 40 mpg and $1.45 a litre, that's about £120.

Like me to show working too ?

Sorry, it's just that i'm on a phone at the moment so it's hard to get to any trip planner websites to work out distances.
