Here's one for you.
My Dad used to have a Rover Montego. Unsurprisingly it was broken into numerous times, and eventually stolen. As far as we knew it was never found, and we got the insurance payout etc... etc... etc...
Just out of interest (actually because I was looking at the brown cars thread and it reminded me) I popped the reg number into the DVLA's website and lo and behold it looks like something interesting happened to it.
The date of liability is 01/10/2002. The vehicle was stolen in 1997. It also states the car's colour is red. It wasn't when we had it! It was most definitely brown.
Not bothered to be honest, but interesting to say the least.

I bought a Volvo 360 in east London fir 50quid (pukka little motor it was too) seller was adamant that he was ronnie kray's cousin and that it was his car - I bored it off as sales patter and didn't think anything of it - done a banger rally in it and scrapped it in Italy, get home v5 turns up and the previous owner? Mr Ronald Kray - god only knows what crime it was used for!!!

The officer at the other end enquired about said Fiat Panda, where I'd been that evening and who was currently the owner. I explained the trade in thing and was informed the car had been used in an attempted robbery in Wythenshawe!! The officer seemed happy with my story and I thought that would be the last I heard of it. Then a letter turned up from the recovery/impound yard requesting payment of £300+, I dont recall the exact figure but it was more than I'd traded the car in for and the price was rising daily. A short phone call later they were happy that I wasnt going to be paying for the car to be released as it was not mine anymore.
The lesson I learnt from this is that when a dealership says they'll sort the paperwork for you, including the new keeper supplement, say No Thankyou! and make sure you send that bit off to the DVLA.
As a further addition 6 months after all that I was poking around at the back of my local H&S exempt scrapyard and came across said Fiat Panda underneath 2 metros, I felt a little bit sad to see my former p&j ending it's days like that.

Ronnie Kray was jailed for life in 1969, Volvo 360 released in 1983.
