Is there a scam going on from bogus buyers?
Discussion
buyers from over seas are getting quite common tbh, my spitty went to belgium, good exchange rate tend to make them 'cheap' for them compared to the ones that fetch a premium already in their country. the guy I sold to was pretty knowledgeable but I would expect quite a few questions to be asked and photos to be sent if I was the buyer, but if they are coming to you with the cash what have you got to lose?
yes I was in a hurry writing that, to add I actually met the guy at folkestone and handed the car over, the guy sent 10% deposit into my bank account first then met me with the rest in cash, obviously it would be advised to meet outside your bank so you can pay it in, my guy seemed spot on (helped he was the president of the club in his country and was quite well known within the club so I risked it and paid it in when I got home and all was fine luckily!)
Sold my XJS to an Italian.
It sounded so much like a scam, he couldn't speak English and got his Nigerian friend to translate on the phone constantly asking for my bank details to transfer the money.
Anyhoo, asked to be paid by Paypal, then transfered to bank, waited a couple of weeks then let a transport company take the car, all's well in the end but a bit of a larf!

I had one couple of these when I sold my TR6. They were clearly scams, because when I offered to meet up (I happened to be in France that week) to show him some photos, he wasn't interested.
I think the way it works is that they 'accidentally' overpay and then ask for the balance to be refunded before the original payment (doesn't) clear.
It might be genuine of course, but take care ...

Don't worry !!! Think posotive.
A guy from France has just bought my 450 for my asking price.
He deposited the full ammount into my account without seeing the car, and collected it 2 weeks later.
Stirling is crap on the F/EX at the moment and they are buying almost 25% cheaper than a few years ago.
Suggest Steve Heath publishes a French B(b)ible.
See you all when I buy my next TVR (next week?????)

Could be genuine - speaking to a German contact today, he asked me out of the blue if I had any classic car contacts - apparently RHD classics are fashionable in Europe (why ? - prob weak sterling as another poster said) and this guy said he had a couple of friends that have bought 45 cars from the UK this last year, to sell on, ranging from MGBs to Merc SLs and Porsche 964s Inc turbo
He gave me one example of an 88 450 SL, mint, 1 owner, low miles FSH - £4k !
ETA - he himself sold his AMG, was going for a Bentley but settled for a Jag XF , so combination of Britcool and or xchange rates
It does add up because a while ago the strong pound made the left hook Porsches look so cheap they were coming into the UK in fairly significant numbers

I'd have thought a straight transfer to your bank would be safer - no PayPal chargebacks? It sounded so much like a scam, he couldn't speak English and got his Nigerian friend to translate on the phone constantly asking for my bank details to transfer the money.

Not necessarily, spoke to bank, there are occasions when money shows up on your account then money whisked away from source, then shows negative in your account and you are left without! This was about 5 years ago.
Also paypal transactions are insured, (unless I am told otherwise).
