There are some of you that will know that my is somewhat overfueling, given away big flames out the back and a strong smell petrol whilst driving... so I asked the garge to have a look and try and solve.

Now the garage have done a bit of investigation and pointed a few things out to me, bearing in mind they don't have much of the history of the car, due to me deciding to change the garage that maintains my car (another story).

They pointed out the following:-

1) Nice carbon fibre trumpets ( I know I paid to have them installed..... good to know they were actually fitted)
2) Larger fuel injectors of a type they have not seen before with yellow and green bands on them IIRC) ... ( again I know as I had them installed)
3) The ECU chip is not a recognised TVR chip..... yikes The garage are not saying it isn't a TVR chip, just not a recognised one.

Now the quandry..

a) leave alone and carry on overfueling .... but with good power and delivery 275bhp

b) take a new pre programmed chip, and standard injectors and see what does

c) Get MA down, one his chips programmed with rr set-up ..... (any ideas on cost of this anyone ???).

all opinions welcome, as i feel i need to chat and discuss this amongst freinds who understand (thats you lot) as my other freinds (in the pub tend to drift off to sleep when I talk cars to them)...... and you lot don't fall a sleep either hehe

Hoover, MA does a great job on these cars, and really knows his onions.

However, he is not the easiest to get hold off as he is so busy.

Have you considered going the whole hog and convert to an aftermarket ECU with mapped ignition?

It certainly opens up the options for people to map the car.

Ditch the Lucas ECU and fit something more capable and more widely mappable to future mods. Lots of places speak MS, Emerald, VEMS, Syvecs etc... Fitting them needn't be vastly expensive.

I went the MA route and an more than pleased with the results. As Ant. Said, he really knows his onions.

Depends really on how far you want to take the car, however MA would be my first port of call if you dont want to change the ecu etc.

I have re built my engine and will hopefully be starting it in the next week or two. Its ni on 12 months since it was last run and for some reason i am fully expecting something to have gone out of sinc. I have therefore given this subject plenty of thought. From what i can gather a MS or similar setup is ni on the same money as a session with Mark Adams. If you go fuel and spark with MS this has got to be better than just sorting the fueling. So my advice would also be go MS or similar.

Why did you have different injectors Hoover

Can you get a picture of the chip - you never know, it might already be an MA chip or at least one that somebody recognises.

It would be worthing trying to find out what the injectors are off, as it may have been a bad upgrade option in the first place? I have some inline PCB's that allow you to alter the AFM output, that will allow you to manually adjust the fueling if you dont mind expermenting, comes with a larger AFM as well............

Ok a few answers and thaughts...

Why did I change my injectors..........

the car was 16 years old, and there was lots of talk of injector cleaning spray patterns etc at the time, so I was considering getting them cleaned. My garage I was using at the time then started talking about diff injectors other then the bosch ones for precat engines. Further discusions with other respected people on the tuning side of the trade and I ended up with what I have now. TBH I was advised about remap at the time, but funds and other minor upgrades ment i kept putting it off.

A wrong upgrade ? Hmmm I guess I will never know unless I get a remap. MA knows exactly what these injectors are, as he commented on them when we were using bits off my car to try and diagnose an issue on another car one year at the Growl, and to be fair to MA, he has seen my car a few times, not for tuning purposes, and keeps asking when I am going to let him map it (and I think he likes it hehe )

..... personally I think it is time to bite the bullet, and get it done and see what we can really get out of the car... just needed to a nudge and a chat to convince myself, still get funds left over from last years engine re-build so YEAH lets do it thumbup

I also like the idea that MA checks the car over looking for bits not working properly as well smile

I`d like to know the true cost of a mapping session with MA. I seem to remember TVR Beaver stating it cost a lot more than he initially anticipated. Having said that he is renowned for doing a very thorough job. Still like to know the cost.

Has anyone fitted a Syvecs ECU to an RV8?

For your car hoover I would go down the MA route. Yours is a nice original example that hasn't been dicked around with.

Racing Green had quite a few enquiries about Syvecs for RV8 at TAG11. They said
they will make it happen woohoo

Syvecs for RV8 would be a very nice solution IMO. Clearly not cheap but you do tend to get what you pay for. 8 on the fly switchable maps sounds good as well.

Upgrading my injectors and getting the car re-chipped and mapped gave me an extra 35BHP! Austec did mine and I was pleased with the results!

Any why do you want or need 8 switchable maps? Don't get blinded by features you dont necessarily need.
I have a switchable ignition map depending on the grade of fuel i'm using but the fuel map remains the same. My VXR8 (GM LS3) also has identical fuel maps, just a high and low octane spark map.

I was thinking:

  • Motorway (economy)
  • Performance
  • ASBO (flames , pops bangs etc)
  • MOT emissions mode
  • Guest / garage mode (detuned and rev limited for when you let some else drive need to leave the car with someone)
  • 95RON fuel mode - just in case.
I know Syvecs also allows for switchable traction control and lauch control which could work on a TVR if wheel sensors are fitted. Probably not of much interest to TVR owners though.

  • Motorway (economy)
Thats a low load area of the map, it would be tuned to 14.7-16.00 anyway.

  • Performance
Thats the high load area of the map, which would be in the 12-13's anyway

  • ASBO (flames , pops bangs etc)

  • MOT emissions mode
Yes maybe. I modified the standard map to run 14.7 closed loop just for the MOT. Took 5 mins to do, then just burnt the std map back in after.

  • Guest / garage mode (detuned and rev limited for when you let some else drive need to leave the car with someone)
Any form of detuning would damage the engine. Rev-limiting it, well yes maybe. You could always change the rev-limit via the laptop before you take it in.

  • 95RON fuel mode - just in case.
No need to change fuel map, but spark map change - yes.

And do you really want to create and manage 8 maps?! Once you have your main fuel map dialed in, you really wont be bothered to keep the other maps up to date or derived from that map.
