It's all well and good living our life to the full but behind every, er, great driver, there is a better woman in my opinion making the sacrifices on our behalf.

Just take Mrs Zakelwe for instance, the years have not been kind, she started off as an utter babe but nowadays, aged 44, she is full of wrinkles. These wrinkles were not brought on by age but my driving skills.

Aged 21 I started dating the future Mrs Zak. It was a Friday. On the very Sunday after I managed to hit a stationary Astra on the M62 at over 70mph in my Morris Ital. The Toyota in front of the Astra was also written off as I slowed myself down to a stop using crumple zones. My lovely lady was unfazed by this.

Roll on a few years to 24 and I am strolling along the top of the M25 in my Rover 216 Vitesse at 115mph. Mrs Zak says " Slow down"

I say "Darling, this is a sports car ( ok, bit of a fib) it can drive like this all day long"

Less than 10 seconds later the engine decides to lose all it's coolant so much so the expansion bottle bursts and we are having an Icelandic volcano from under the bonnet. On the hard shoulder she gives me "THE LOOK"

Aged 28 I decide all this moaning about cars is enough and besides I want a bike now and we all know bikes and chicks don't mix unless they are called Suzie with a z. So I send my wife packing and sow my wild oats and live life to the full all the way to a helicopter ride on HEMS to the Royal London.

"Will you take me back even though I am in a wheelchair?"

So roll on a few years and I suddenly decide, that after a few beers I want an AMG C43. We get it and to cut a long story short I have to sell £3000 of her jewelry to pay for my gearbox. How much punishment can these solid as gold ladies take?

So I finally say I will settle down. I buy a Toyota Aygo to give her for once the easy life. Cracking engine. Some aftermarket parts. Before I know it my Aygo is doing track days and a round of the Toyota Sprint Series.

Cue phone call

"I've rolled the Aygo at a track day"

"It's not insured .. I've decided to buy a Yaris diesel to rid me of these demons forever"

And so that is where I now live, with a boring diesel but one fantastic wife. I am getting 74mpg on my latest tankful and 20 years plus on my wife.

biggrin

That is the ultimate classic from the Mrs. Putting up with me for all these years.

bow

PS I got the Yaris superchipped as I think I can get away with that ..... wow and Caymans are so cheap nowadays ... 20k

I think I may have misread this - are you saying you are in a wheel chair, you find a yaris so fast you can't control it and you are now happy in some sort of diesel sh*t box, and your mrs is past her best - but you are happy to be in this position?

On the second date with the future Mrs, I managed to roll a metro down an embankment into a field, followed by a 4 mile walk home... Still, we had plenty of time to chat on that long walk smile

After we'd moved in together she had this great idea of a romantic stroll round the resevoir. I may have being going a little quick and I may have misjudged that patch of mud on the country lane, but I definitely misjudged the entrance to the car park, skidded on the mud and started sliding straight for the reservoir. So there we are, out of control and a large body of water approaching when there's a huge bang. The bonnet flies open and a tape resting in the player flies in and starts playing (Seasons in the sun ffs). Luckily the metros 12" wheels wouldn't go over that large kerb before we hit water.

Then later when she was 7 months pregnant and acompanying me on one of trips to the other end of the country, the cam belt snaps on the van and we spend 2 hours on the hard shoulder, followed by 2 more hours waiting in a layby, finished by 6 hours being brought home in a recovery truck - she was dying for the loo all that time lol

nono She mentions the wrinkles and no woman would do that.

We camped at Donington fora race when SWMBO was 4 months pregnant, I got through to the main race so we spent an extra night there, and between my drunken snoring and the flights into East Mids airport she probably got 10 hours kip all weekend.

Then there was the time the tent blew down at Croft and she slept in the car. She was a bit less pregnant then biggrin

Took you back after you dropped her to go off biking and sleep around? Sounds like more of a mug than a champ.

Also, in the OP, each car is named by either make or model. If it had been the good lady posting, this would probably have been "the red car smashed into the blue car in front".

My wife puts up with me spinning the laptop round every five minutes to show her the next car I want to buy, along with a plaintive, "Can I have £560 for a BMW 523/Lexus LS400/anything at all?".

She's too busy on netmums pretending to be interested in cheap meals when she is actually heavily imvolved with something far more subversive and perverted!

You see, it's not only me.

I think MikeyBe has a far higher sperm count than me considering the stories though. Van drivers eh, always space for a mattress.

My lass put up with me buying an MX5. She wasn't sold on the car to start with, but did put up with it's faults. Many journeys spent freezing cold or boiling hot. Having to shout to talk to each other when on dual carriageways due to road and wind noise. Having water running out of the roof liner when you opened the doors In the rain.

When I got my S60, she had the fking cheek to complain about me getting a new car after 4 months! She soon changed her tune when she realised how good the S60 was. She hasn't done any of those irritating "scream and grab the door handle" moments like she used to every time the backend of the MX5 slid out on a wet corner despite the S60 being a lot faster.

No complaints here either.

Been with Rooodgirl over eight years now.

She's put up with a long wait on a rainy hard shoulder following a blown Nissan 200sx engine after it let go at a number of leptons (not that long after we first met).

Several engine re-builds in a very cold garage until the early hours of mornings, some of which made me very angry when things didn't go well.

Countless sideways moments (including some big 'uns) in various cars including her own MR2 Roadster, and me getting her MR2 airborne too.

Entering the gravel trap at Paddock Hill Bend at Brands Hatch in a turbocharged E30 3-Series BMW still doing around 70mph, which she said was 'quite exciting' and 'the highlight of her day'.
I thought exiting Clearways well into 3rd gear with an full arm-full of oppo almost every lap was a lot more dangerous, but that didn't seem to excite her much!

Me stopping the car and running back up the road to collect broken / detached components.

Me spending way too much money keeping old cars going, making them go faster and then selling or scrapping them.

Freezing almost solid in a very cold, wet, noxious-fumy, noisy, draughty TVR Wedge, especially when I insist on having the roof down in sub-zero temperatures.

Getting out of said Wedge to pull the headlamps up when I switch them on and they get stuck half way, because I can't get out as the engine will stall and the handbrake won't hold it and it would roll away!

Being terrified when passenger door of said Wedge flies open whilst pressing on round a large roundabout.

Being terrified when bonnet of said Wedge flies up on the passenger side at some leptons on the A20 totally blocking her sight out of the windscreen.

Thanks love!

But she does get her cars serviced and repaired for free, by me! biggrin

Mrs DTP, well she's had a few, the poor thing:
  1. When the heater matrix in my old Impreza Turbo decided to leak most of the coolant in the car into her handbag which was sitting beside her legs in the passenger footwell when we on our way to Prestwick airport from Aberdeen for a trip to Dublin back in 2002. I proposed in Dublin and she still said yes. I must have known that matrix was on the way out, as I'd a spare at home.
  2. Not minding toooo much that there are more pictures of the rental car (a Cadillac De Ville) on our honeymoon that there is of her....
  3. Tolerating me buying a 16-year old Jaguar with a bonus from work rather than paying off credit card bills. Clearly that was the most financially sensible thing to do.....
  4. Back in 2007, putting up with my fleet parked at the door, which entailed a W124 Mercedes 500SE, a BMW 635CSi and a Saab 95 Aero. She rightly pointed out that it's embarrassing when the neighbours find it getting to park because of my cars... Plus she had her Smart. Talking of which,
  5. Whilst I was working away in the US, we changed home, as part of that she sold her daily driver, the Smart Fortwo and then commuted for a month or so in my 1989 BMW 635CSi. The Merc and Saab had been sold by that time. Those phone calls with her complaining about the lack of fuel economy, I still feel guilty about the £5 a day in fuel for a 16mile return commute.....
  6. Or the time when I was flying back from 5 months in Texas, I hadn't seen her in a month, and she was due to pick me up from the airport. So she went out to the 635 to discover that due to the lack of a lights on buzzer, the battery had flattened itself as she'd left the lights on a few nights previous. Cue a confused me and a wife in floods of tears frown
  7. Not being keen on 4x4s at all, but has taken the 4.0 Cherokee remarkably well. Although I've made a lot of the tow hitch and now we have a car that isn't a reverse tardis (see the 635!).

Mrs HD is also a superstar.

She has put up with my various cars over the years without complaint.
I also work away from home and during the summer when there's some sort of event on, she happily tags along and helps out with the racing.
This year, I went out and splurged my bonus on an Electra Glide and she didn't raise an eyebrow. Even though she doesn't like bikes, she puts up with it because I like it.

Been happily married for 28 years now. Top Bird beer

Mine lovely wife has endured much in our happy years together.

A 5 mile night-time hike after running out of petrol in an Impreza I'd just collected (one and only time I've done it!)

Several long and cold days at motorshows and meets

Spending more time washing the cars than with her

Agreeing to do Route 66 as our honeymoon (when deep down I know she wanted Hawaii!)

Countless purchased cars instead of paying off debts

"The Look" only issued a few times, several while perfecting lift off oversteer in the CTR, and one when crashing the RX8 (while she was pregnant)

Still, she's put me through a bit with cars:

Reversing into me on our own drive

Maintaining her Metro was "an incredible car" even after the gearbox fell out of the bottom

Getting rid of an incredible Puma to buy a hateful Mini, citing her reasons as "I wanted a new car because you've had a new car"

Making me drive a Diahatsu Copen regularly (albeit I did love it)

Mine put up with me buying the TVR, though he didn't have a lot to bring to the argument after I pointed out it was my money and that I'd fully supported him buying an R32 and then spending a still-unspecified amount of money fettling it. smile
