Returning to a car you used to own.

have you eve bought another version of the car you used to love many years ago? and how did it go?

I used to have an old 1995 Jeep Cherokee 4.0. By far the most amount of fun I've ever had in a car. beats the beamers, skyline and a whole load of other cars I've had since.
Very tempted to go back and get a 1998-2001 facelift version, maybe on diesel or lpg, but worried my memories of it may be a bit embellished upon!

Sold my Cav SRi back in 2000 with 179k on the clock and it's still alive.
A Volvo 740 estate a year before also still alive.

It would be nice to see them again. Worse the Citreon BX 1.9D wich was dumped at 197k and still is taxed.

Not impressive cars but doing well.

I was tempted to return to another Impreza, I didn't want to get rid of it (nothing was wrong with the car) but mr insurance decided to be a fkwit and not cover me upon renewal. Still not sure whether to go for it or not, I want one back but at the same time I'm after a CSL.

Trick is to get a better version of the one you owned. I had a BMW E30 316 that I owned for 8 years. Ran a TVR S1 for 3 years then went back to an E30 with a 325i with all the bells and whistles. 10 Years later I still love it

My first car was a S1 106 XSI which was basically a Rallye but with electric windows and a fuel injected 1.4. I loved it but it was so unreliable as I had messed about with a cam and stuff.

I then got an Ibiza Cupra but longed for another 106 so I got the lowest mileage, mintest 106 GTI I could find which was an utter beauty. Kept it for a while but started doing silly miles seeing clients and didn't want to rack the miles up. Sold it on here, was the most expensive GTI at the time with the lowest mileage.

If I stumbled across that GTI I'd be very tempted to buy it back.

I do still look in the classifieds for them!

I'm also tempted to go back to a mk1 Audi TT but either a Quattro Sport 240 or a V6... But then I'm really liking S2k's atm.

I had a BMW Mini as my first car then around 18 months ago I bought a Mini Works GP..gutted really as years ago I would of loved it but it just felt painfully slow and very heavy on fuel when you tried to extract the performance. The cars I had in between were just that much faster and better all round that it never really stood a chance...shame

I had 2 Volvo 850 T5's consecutively. Very much a been there/ done that scenario and I don't think I'd do it again.

My sister though did buy a metro many years ago, changed to a renault 19 and bought the exact same metro back about a year later. Crazy and lets just stress it was a 5 door metro with a 1.1 K series

Went to see my old Cadillac BLS when I saw it advertised nearby. Not a popular car but I looked after it well.

It had been thrashed/scratched/hard used by its owners since. I was genuinely shocked at how bad my P&J looked, especially since the dealer wanted the same that I paid for it 3 years previously.

Bought a black 3dr MK5 Golf Gti 7months old and had if for 18months - replaced with an Audi TT, but missed it so bought a 3year old 5dr MK5 Golf Gti 6 months after the first one went - sold after 6 months for a boring Zafira for my missus when the baby turned up. Still miss having a MK5 Golf Gti.

I would be seriously, seriously tempted by an Astra GTE if the insurance wouldn't kill me.


Actually scratch that, I would have an Astra GTE were it not for the insurance. It pisses me off in a way. *Touch wood* I cannot fault my Astra, it's far older than it has any right to be, and whilst I have serviced it religiously it has put up with a lot of abuse and only once let me down due to a burst radiator hose - that was just down to the rubber perishing through age. It's got more economical than when I first owned it too. I'm not sure whether that's due to a change in driving style but it feels better, revs more freely. Rust is taking hold now and I'm not sure how it'll fare at the next MOT. I figure unless it's anything silly major for now I'll just get whatever needs doing done. If the worst happens and I end up breaking it () then I am 100% sure I'll end up with another one not too long afterwards. I would be worried though that mine is just a one-off diamond in a sea of coal, so to speak

I've gone back to Jag XJ's several times, s2, s3, xj40 and x300. I just miss them after i've sold them and end up getting another every few years, usually the same variety of 4.2 i've had before.. They are a car I get fed up with, then a year or two later the 'rose tinted spectacles' are back on and I need another. I think I have accepted now that it is a cycle I will never be able to break !

To the OP, I had a Forrest Green Jeep Cherokee 4.0, which was great. But, a good Range Rover v8 Classic, is even better imo. They can even be very reliable, if you do the correct preventative stuff and keep on top of maintenance in a dedicated way.

I've returned to a 2001 Honda Insight, had my last one several years & it was the most reliable & economical car I had ever owned, so after realising I had made a mistake selling it, 3 years later I managed to find another one.

Itech, agree with the RR idea, but the mrs would kill me. she already thinks jeeps look a bit old and tired as it is! Plus the overhang at the back scares me a bit taking it offroad.

I've no idea why the cherokee grabbed me the way it did. I did do quite a lot of offroading, and found it very capable, that combined with quite good handling on road, loads of power, great practicality, and just the idea of being able to go anywhere yet be a little refined with some on road ability!

Fuel was always an issue, it was a combination of fuel and being quite so outdated inside that made us get rid of it. Now I have a bike for my commute, and if I got the facelifted version it would look a lot nicer inside.
