synthetic oil for a petrol car in a diesel engine...problem?

Here's the problem, Our A6 2.0tdi (07) is asking for a litre of oil, As its on the variable service schedule the oil allegedly has loads of additives to allow it to not have to be changed for 20k or yrs. The car is booked in for a service next friday which will obviously mean an oil change.

Being a tight arse I dont really want to spend £18 on a litre of oil which will be chucked away next week, Will the synthetic oil (mobil) I have which is for petrol cars be ok for a top up or am I asking for trouble.

The car will prob travel about 500 miles this week.

I believe VAG cars require the correct spec 'PD' oil. I personally wouldn't try and save a few quid in this instance

Read the can (or tub/ container etc) and you'll probably find it is OK.

A lot of the current oils are suitable for petrols and turbodiesels.

Get along to Halfords, they do a suitable grade for PD engines.

What specification does the Mobil oil you have meet, and what spec does the Audi require? You can then determine if it's suitable.

Check the oil using the dipstick. If it's at the minium mark, then typically adding half a litre would take the level to mid-way between min and max marks. That should cover you for 500 miles unless your car has an oil consumption problem.

If you do need to buy oil, Eurocarparts do 1 litre Carlube Triple R 5w30 Longlife Fully Synthetic VW, (Meets VW 504.00/507.00 which is probably what your car requires), for £11.50. If you only need to add 0.5 litre, you've then still got half a litre for future top ups and only "wasted" £5.75

Get the right oil, VAG are very particular on their oils.

2.0 '07 car won't be a PD, it'll be a common rail. Much less fussy about their oil.

In any case, some oil is better than low oil. Put it in, it's only for a short time.

I have no problem putting the right oil in, it just seems a shame that it will be in for 6days only

Your car needs oil. So top it up!

At which point would you say that it's 'worth' doing? - we already know that you don't think a litre is worth topping up, but perhaps if it needed 2 litres? - or is that not worthwhile either? - how about if there's no oil in there at all? - I mean, it's only for a week - what's the worst that can happen?
