I noticed the other day my new Chim had a little bit of play at the steering wheel, dont remember noticing it before but Ive only done about 150 miles in it so could have been there since I bought it or may have just developed. Had a very quick look earlier and not 100% sure where its from so Iam gone a put it up on a ramp at the garage I used to work at tomorrow (need change the oil & adjust the handbrake anyway). Whilst I was having a look I noticed the grease nipple on the rack (manual rack) so searched on here and found some say they use normal grease and others seem to say should be oil in the rack??? What is right then should I just use normal grease gun or not? I did also read some say it has taken the play out of the rack so this may help the little bit of play I have at the steering wheel. Will have a proper look on the ramp in the morning but wanted to check if I was ok to grease it or not.
Cheers for any help
Mike

Manual rack i guess then ? should be 3 grease ports one at each end by the gaiters and one on the section where the steering column joins, its a servicable job but can get missed,i had play in my rack albeit slight on the n/s,greased the rack and the play went.I would think the oil inside comment reffered to the power steering racks, but rest assured they dont stay oil filled for long ....

Play at the steering wheel id check the u/j's in the steering column shaft leading to the rack as per Daz's post above, they do get a lot of rode grime thrown at them and they do wear.

Put it on the ramp this morning and found the pinch bolt slightly loose on the rack end of the bottom UJ, tightened them all up and now feels much better. Not really sure how long its been like that it did have the outriggers replaced earlier this year before I bought it so assume they didn't fully tighten it! Changed the oil, undersealed the new outriggers, adjusted the handbrake but completly forgot to grease the steering rack and investigate the annoying squeak from the N/S rear suspension! Hopefully gone a have a run to Newark in it sunday anyway

You can grease the outer nipples from the top side so no ramp needed, the other one i just jack the osf corner up to get access.
