Do nurburgring times mean anything?

Seems every new car now has an associated 'ring time and according to the below link, the new 1m coupe did an 8.15.

That's 7 odd seconds slower than the new megane?! What?!

Obviously it's not supposed to be a race car but surely BMW won't have expected a relatively slow time from their highly praised new baby? 10 seconds slower than the m3 does not seem to echo what a number of writers have been saying it's like...

The people who believe that faster = better think so. Others aren't fussed.

It is just a new statistic, like horsepower or 0-60mph. Although it is a pretty crap measure given the differences in driver skill and just how "standard" (Nissan) the car is.

Not really. However, I do find them interesting to compare different cars on the same road, and that road does seem to cover all the bases. High speed, handling, braking, etc. It's an interesting talking point, but means very little to the car you have on your drive.
