Budget £20k, must be auto, but decent auto. At least mondeo sized, but not huge. Don't care about running costs, particularly, but not ludicrous.

Suggestions, please?

A 535d touring would fit the bill perfectly I reckon.

Mondeo autos are Mondeo sized and auto. Have you considered a Mondeo auto?

This is a bargain. Forget about diesels, overpriced and have expensive problems when they get older.

Volvo V70, great ride, reliable, safe, swift enough for the road, plenty of room, not too big and it doesn't say anything about you other than you bought a reasonably big, comfortable car.

Yup, but doesn't kind of tick the right boxes. I was thinking more of 335/535 type of thing, with a decent auto box. The only recent Mondeo I've driven was an auto, but I wasn't inspired... (though it was a 2.2 diesel, I think, so a but pedestrian.)

Subaru Legacy.......

Edited to add didn't read decent auto - it's fine but mine (2004) was only 4 speed (which it got into at 30mph) so not the best.......

OK, advice digestedsmile The problem is auto boxes, the only decent ones appear to be BMW, and Mercedes. Of the two the BMW 6 speed seems clunky compared to the MB 7 speed, but better than most others.

So BMW 330/335, diesel or petrol or diesel or MB C with the bigger engines.

Who else does decent autos?

+1, at least take a look at the V70 if your after an estate car. The T5's are quick too...

We have an Audi A4 Avant 2.0T Quattro with the tiptronic box (not to be mistaken for the dodgy Multitronic FWD box hehe). Works well.

Though I'd probably get the 3.0TDI for the extra grunt, but that will be costlier.

2010 Skoda Superb Estate 5-Dr 1968 cc 2.0 TDI CR Elegance DSG (170 BHP)

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...

They look better than saloon and have just dipped under £20k. If you can strech the budget you can get a lower mileage 2.0 or go for a nice 3.6 V6 option. lick (£25k)

The DSG boxes are always getting good reviews aswell.

The BMW's are a good very shout though, I just thought I would put this wild-card suggestion.

Newer ones are 5-speed, although the box feels old-fashioned compared to the really modern ones Mercedes and others are fitting.

Having said that, I'd still vote Legacy, and just marvel at your abilities when the snow returns. smile

There are loads of other reasons why you'd buy a Legacy - the 3-litre one has a cam-chain, they never break down, they are a decent size, you get electric everything, quite fast steering (makes other cars I drive feel like buses), fast

Has to be an E-Class Benz, with the 7-G box; but make sure it is a post 2006 facelift model. The earlier ones are fragile.

How about this

http://bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/bmwauc/details/0,,1156___as...

15,000 miles, July 2009, BMW AUC so comes with 12 month warranty, 12 months BMW assist and anything else you can negotiate.

btw the tyre insurance is a good deal as it is cheaper than even having to replace 1 runflat and they will cover up to 5.

Subaru Legacy or Outback with either the 3.0 or 3.6 petrol engine.

We have an Outback 3.0rn and the engine is lovely, its pretty swift for a 4x4, well made, reasonably unusual and according to the schoolboy test (primary school gates) its cool

I agree that a 318 isn't likely to be what the OP is after if he's not worried about running costs and wants a Mondeo sized car. Also it's tyre not tire!

Anyway...

Is a 4x4 an option? A lot of them are not bigger, except being taller, than a lot of the cars listed and often get praised for the their auto boxes.
