thermostat stuck open or not?
Discussion
as per title yr help would be highly appreciated;
just checked my thermostat (engine running from cold) via top radiatorhose and something got me thinking;
hose was not directly warm but when my temp. gauge was reading 50 the hose was getting warm before the otter switch from the fan's kicked in, the otter switch is a 74 celcius one?!
my thermostat is also 74 celcius one.
is this normal because when the fan's kicked in at 74 degrees top radiatorhose was very hot!?
reason for asking yesterday i had something strange when suddenly in slow traffic and rain my temp. gauge went from 90 to 100 and i did not heard the fan's at 100 degrees?
so i stopped and turned of the car, later when on the move again my fan's where working at 90 degrees and temp. gauge stayed at 90?!
do i have a problem or is this just something that can happen?
not had this in 4 years owning the car; griffith 500 from '95 btw.
many thanks for yr help

A traditional wax thermostat has quite a wide opening range, so a 74degC rated thermostat is likely to start to open (and therefore allow coolant flow) several degrees lower than that. In saying that, it's not that uncommon for them to stick.
Another potential issue perhaps is the coolant temp gauge, which can be inaccurate. Mine reads only a little bit too high during normal running (90ish) but the gauge then reaches 100 a lot sooner than the engine does. Is it possible to calibrate it with a thermocouple stuck into your coolant hose or anything?

maybe i'm a bit over worried and nothing wrong i'll have a check when driving again to see all systems go!
on the move on the highway the temp gauge is solid 70 degC and in slow traffic it slowly goes to 90degC that was
the last trip in the car in slow traffic for 30min's and the gauge did not go to 100degC.
this is total normal behavior.
later on when going home in slow traffic and some rain the temp gauge passed 90degC to stayed at 100degC never had that before in 4 years and that was a bit strange to me.
maybe a rough day for the car in total 368km trip!?
