MX5!
So been looking for a project for a while and been looking at '37 Austin Rubys and the like. However, a few weeks ago we were down at our local old style garage and the owner had just brought in (to make room at home for his Morgan and DB9) an absolutely bog basic "B" reg Metro 1.0 city. No radio or aerial (nor ever had either) no rear wash /wipe and only 1 owner from new with history and 60.000 miles.
Chap wanted £600 for it and I was seriously tempted..... but even I couldn't (and still can't) work out why I want/ed it so much! Really is in most pleasant condition with no rust or dents.... but still, it's a Metro!
Anyway, been out to have a look at an Alegro VDP this lunchtime and if the young chap had wanted to finish the auction early, I would have been driving home in it. However, he didn't, so we went to Central Garage to have yet another look at the dreaded bloody Metro!
Talking to Peter (the owner) about the car and I was trying desperately to get him to drop the price when he mentioned another car I might be interested in - an MX5 (Eunos roadster really) for £1200.
For £1200 I was expecting a doggy "H" reg thing, but instead was a near mint (needs a good clean and polish - that really is all) "P" reg auto with fancy wheels. Loads of history, 70.000 miles and few owners roof has a couple of little tears in it ut nothing to worry about and a fancy stereo.
Took it for a drive and it's lovely.
Went back and bought the pair for £1600!
For that price they are MOTing both (the Metro had a fail slip from Central with a ball joint as the only failure).
Result or what?

Yes, Brixham indeed. Peter is a smashing bloke - don't know him particularly well just from buying a couple of cars from him before for the dearly beloved. He's had the Metro in his own garage at home for the past three years and was in no rush to sell it.
Really strange..... I absolutely love that little Metro! Going to keep it absolutely as it is, bog basic, not even going to fit it with a radio, Drivers seat has split on a seam so that needs repairing but otherwise it's just maintenance and the occasional spin out in it.
The Mazda we've decided is going to live outside so the wife will use it as well (she hates getting the car into or out of the garage) and is just going to get polished up and cleaned to within an inch of its life. The passenger side window doesn't work (so I'm told - I didn't check) so that's something to play with. The motor works okay so it must be a linkage or something.
Not sure about the wheels so it might get a set of Minilites/clones but it's got a lovely stereo (din E is it?) and the roof goes up and down manually faster than my Merc does electrically! I can see the Mazda getting a lot of use as the third car......

The metro will need to be kept in original condition...No temptations to tune it unless you keep all the original stuff to put back.
The MX5 would not have been a favourite of many having an auto box. You can shaft the MX5 as a daily driver, and place funds into the not extraordinary metro as a very long term investment...(For your Grandchildren)?

The metro looks great, keep it looking completely standard, but fit a tuned A series with about 100 bhp, straight cut gears, some decent shocks and off you go! The MX5 would not have been a favourite of many having an auto box.
