VIllages around newbury

So, daft as it sounds, I'm thinking of selling the Ferrari to fund a house move closer to work.

So, ideally, I want to move to a village and buy a nice character cottage.

So, can anyone recommend any nice villages in the area, and as it seems tough to find character properties for sale, any pointers in that direction are most welcome.

Hi Fidgits,

I've been in Newbury all my life so hopefully i can help! Firstly, I'll say it's fairly hard to go too far wrong around here - most areas are pretty nice. It depends partly on your priorities for moving (proximity to A34 / M4, catchments for nice schools, easy access to town).

A few ideas:

- Stockcross is nice and has a well regarded primary school (I should know, i went there!). It's a small village (2 pubs though ), and has good access to Newbury and the A34 / M4.

- Hermitage is further out but again a very nice place with good schools. There's an Army barracks there which is home to an Engineering regiment. Don't let this dissuade you though, i've never heard of any trouble in this regard.

Smaller places I know less about but seem nice: Bagnor, Winterbourne (nice pub here), Ashmore Green (another nice pub), Highclere (has a castle dontcha know), Donnington (has a ruined castle), Boxford (quite idyllic).

Oh, and once you've moved in, go for a drive from Donnington to Wantage to Hungerford - cracking roads

Depends what your budget is?

Aldermaston has some nice houses (and an excellent primary where our kids are)

We thought East Garston was a beautiful village, and really what we wanted. But the property we saw was way overpriced.

Oh, and West Berks doesn't have a single Labour councillor - hence the rubbish is still collected weekly

Rumours are this is closing to be replaced by a large housing estate.

I spent 18 months working just across the road from tot hill services on the a34 and would recommend taking a look around Woolton Hill. It's a couple of mins drive off the a34 and a lovely little village (apart from when the builders are in town )

Yeah, I had an offer accepted on a cottage in eastbury just down from East Garston last year, but got gazumped.

Budget isn't set yet, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of choice with what I want - as ideally I want a character cottage.

Hey, does anyone have an opinion of lamparces shaw?

Seen a reasonable house there in budget, and is walking distance to work, though neither a cottage or village..
