Borrowed my brother's e36 e328i sport coupe to drop him+gf at the airport the other day, and had forgotten what a superb all rounder they are.

Was looking at them 6 or 8 months ago and decent ones were getting a bit thin on the ground.

Just spent an hour on the classifieds and most of them seem to be dogs - either hideously modified or tatty frown

Are there any decent honest ones left?

Many have sadly ended up in the wrong hands. However a well maintained 328I Sport is a cracking car. Keep looking and you will find a good one and will not be disappointed.

Apart from the alloys lacquer peeling looks like a tidy example.

Hmmm, not sure how I missed that one. Does look nice. Shame it's at a dealer though.

I was casually considering this one but I'm not sure so you can have a headstart ...

Great little car this. Do they have many know thoughts? I am thinking of adding an e36 as a second car, would be nice to have an M3 but this could be a better bet?

Would this count as a classic car for insurance purposes do you think?

I spent a long time last year looking for a good 328 Sport - many were advertised as such and were a real let down.

I eventually found one 200 miles away, rare colour (Atlantis Blue) and great spec, very sympathetically updated and all mods easily reversible - paid top money for it but it has been an absolute joy.

Spent money on it since buying but out of choice rather than necessity - would I get my money back - not today but as its a keeper its no problem.

Now a cherished car, all wheels off weekly and arches cleaned, exhaust polished weekly (not just the tips, the whole system), the amount of comments it gets are amazing for what is just a 12 year old BMW

They're great cars....I bought one new in 1996 and absolutely loved it. Drove it for a year and bought an M3 Evo Cab which I regretted (the scuttle shake on the M3 was pretty bad).....pound for pound the 328 Sport was the better car, no question.

Well maintained 328s are getting really rare.. especially with low mileage..
but i have noticed that there are more 328 with low mileage than the M3.
it is possible to get a low mileage (60k-80k miles) for less than 3k.
also it is recommended to service the car and change the most common parts e.g. bushes
and spend some money into it to get the most out of it..

I agree with your assessment NCOT, they are indeed superb all rounders. Apart from the seats I prefer the driving experience of my E36 above the E90.Have you considered the Alpina option ? The E36 B3 ( 3 litre and 3.2 ) is based on the 328i and although a bigger initial outlay to purchase has an air of quality not to be dismissed. Look here :

Great spec, never seen one with rear parking sensors, cruise control or rear blinds. Headlamp washers as well!

This is mine,

Don't be put off by the mileage, had an engine rebuild under warranty at 70k in 2001.
Also being an early car with all tge options ticked it has Avus suspension and LSD. Not mentioned in the ad, it also has an iPod controlling headunit.

Lovely car, the only thing that puts me off is Saffron (mustard) leather. Easily recoloured to Modena though...

As you are looking, do you know that are several variations of the sport?

As in Traction, no traction and no traction + LSD?

Also you need to make sure that the car doesn't have a Nikasil block, the change date is march 1998 but there are a few cars after that date with nikasil. A huge amount of early nikasil cars will have had replacement short blocks under warranty/recall.

Only the early cars had the option of LSD's and any car with traction will not have one!

Without reigniting the nikasil debate I think its fairer to say if you find the right car with a nikasil block beware the historic issues (the cause of which is now resolved) and carry out the easy tests to check for bore wear.

Agreed,

Just pointing out for the uninitiated that homework needs to be done prior to buying a nikasil car!
