£30k Saloon

Dad is looking for a new car for the drive to work but also to ferry the directors about when they come over. It therefore has to be something that looks quite executive and is a nice place to sit, both in the front and rear. He wants a diesel engine with a bit of oomph about it. He is also keen on getting something that is about 25k base and specing it right up rather than just getting a base model BMW or Jag.

Ideas at the moment are:

S60 D5
Top spec Mondeo
Top spec Mazda 6
Saab 9-5 aero
Skoda Superb

Which of these should be struck off the list, or are all good contenders. Are there any that we may have overlooked?

Does it have to be new? A Mondeo or Mazda 6 looks more sales rep than executive and will depreciate heavily. £30k buys a nicely run in well specified E-Class or Jag XF...

You seem to have discounted it, but I would also consider the jag XF. Makes a very good impression on passengers in my experience.

Great cars, only issue may be the poor spec on most models.

If I were a company director, I wouldn't be too impressed if I was wedged into the back of a 3-series.

S80 is a very good call - but buy nearly new, rather than new, as year 1 depreciation is epic.

You'd struggle to find anything else as nicely finished for the money.

Another vote for the XF here. £30k would see you in a 3.0 V6 Diesel (either 240bhp or 275bhp) with about 10000 miles on the clock - and lets face it even the base model XF isn't exactly short on toys.

That would get you one hell of a lot of 535d, saloon or touring!

What's the general opinion on the new passat? Not the CC just the normal passat

It's not as good as the Superb.

And since the list price on the new XF 2.2 diesel is £30,250 I can't see that you need to look elsewhere.
