I couldnt find a ford 302 for less than £3K..Then its got to be fitted..I had a quote for a front mounted turbo which would give around 200BHP/260ftlb torque for about £1500 which doesnt include the cost of the turbo..Some turbos are under £500..And providing the engine is in good working order then no engine work would be needed unless you go over the 200BHP..I might look into it more next year..Or at least once mine is running with no issues...Which is going to cost a small fortune as it is..Ill probably be too old to drive it by the time its finished..

I know they are doing a lot of work but three grand for probably 200 horses? I'm fairly sure you could rebuild and fit a Ford 302 V8 for less than that.
More like 250, a totally re-built and reconditioned motor, and ease of fitting too.Always going to be cheaper to EXCHANGE and adapt an existing engine.
How reliable and well-built they are is another question of course.
I just thought it sounded interesting.

Me ?
Of course I'd prefer the 302 option.

I’m not knocking it Graham and you’re right it would be easier. I’m just saying for that kind of money I’d be looking for a V8 rumble
To be fair I’d settle for a car with an MOT at the moment, never mind 250BHP!
One other option that has been kicking about in my head is the 4 litre Ford Explorer engine. Does anyone know just how similar the block is to the 2.8?

The older 4-litre was a stroker of the 2.8 type I believe, so same dimensions, but the later (better) 200+ bhp were OHC, so probably wouldn't fit easily in a TVR anyway.
Has to be Cossie V6 I reckon, if not a V8.
The 280 has the narrower engine bay chassis, so that will always be a limitation.

the explorer lump is made in cologne, but does share the same bolt pattern for the engine mounts and is slightly taller than the 2.8 and 2.9 lumps
the bellhousing pattern is the same tho, and its not any longer than the baby cologne.
they do a OHV and apparently the later version was OHC

as far as i know, the 4.0 is just over 200bhp as standard. the figures ford quoted were a tad on the low side
id have gone for the 4.0 over the 24v cossie in my motor if i knew that before the swap! and theres plenty of tuning stuff from the states for the engine too,, as its fitted in the Explorer and the Ranger pickup out there
i think the power engineering 3.5 kit uses the 4.0 crank in the 2.8 (modified) block with custom pistons and rods

Dimensionally the 4.0 OHC (which is a crappy set up the way it is driven) is the same block, just a little higher with the heads (shouldn't be a big issue) and with the intake manifold is nearly identical for bottom to top height. Not sure about the Exploder set up but mine comes via the 07ish Mustang engine. It was rated at 215hp by Ford but most make in the 225-230hp range. I do see the biggest problem being with the exhaust manifolds as with the 2.9 but that should be something that can be overcame easily. I looked into that option. Can get an engine and tranny with under 20k for under $2k here in the states. Problem is you would still have a 40 year old iron lump. Looking towards the new Mustang 3.7l once they become more readily available and someone does a stand alone system for it. Engine is smaller and gives 300hp and 30mpg in the stang plus you loose a solid 200lbs up front and move the engine back about 2 inches to boot.

I've been dreaming again.... £450 for a cut out 302, you can get rebuild kits including new pistons for about the same money. New 4 barrel Holley carb for £300 etc. It's all do-able if you've got a bit of disposable.http://www.realsteel.co.uk/usedengines.pdf
And it goes into a Series 1 V6 space, Grahamw48 has the link where someone over the pond has one in a FHC.
...Not wanting to stir emotions here but

Cobra boys use them too. Apparently 300bhp is about the norm.

You would certainly have to factor in a new gearbox though. No way a Type9 would handle SBF power outputs, I'd be looking at a T5.
I believe that's the accepted gearbox (T5).
Of course SBFs have TVR history too, so shouldn't upset the purists too much.
Have a listen to this: heeheehee.
