E90 diesel running costs
Discussion
Considering an 3 or 4 year old E90 diesel, 318d, 320d or even a 325d.
What are the service intervals?
And what sort of costs am I looking at for 'considerable' repairs.
Will be buying car at circa 30-40k and will be putting on 100k or so over 4-5 yrs.
Am I likely to be needing clutches, belts, waterpumps, turbos etc??

If you get a I6 diesel 325/330/335d you will get the auto not manual so clutch not relevant.

Oil change every 25k c£180
Inspection every 35k c£110
Air con re gas service bi annual c£100
Air filter every 25k - same as oil change duration c£50
Discs and pads c50-60k c£600-800

Probably he would want a new drivers seat at that milage.
New bushes all round.
New windscreen chips and possible auto lights and auto wipers issues
DPF buy higher milage car to start with and add 100k to it your going to need a replacement one.
That said I bought mine at 60k and now into the 80's k frankly the car is as new. I maintain it regardless of cost and really take care of it but so far it's been a great all round car. A blast when you want to easy fast pace cross country always, overtaking is easy in a car like this, handling... Well it's like its on rails great turn in and it grips so much. Then you have the economy mode when you need it.

Been spotting this looking in the classifieds.
A 30-40k car is £4-5k more than an 80k car now.
Yet a 120k car isn't much more in value than a 160k car used.
But what additional costs could you encounter between 120-160k?A 30-40k car is £4-5k more than an 80k car now.

Id say new suspension all round including springs drivers seat.
How about buying a 60k car nice compromise.

Either way, think i need to weigh up assuming the worse - just to be on the safe side! If not, then can spend it on cosmetic improvements or a remap!

You would want to remap a younger / fresher engine not a leggy one. Either way, think i need to weigh up assuming the worse - just to be on the safe side! If not, then can spend it on cosmetic improvements or a remap!
Cosmetic improvements will be the latest m sport wheels removal of stone chips and new windscreen. The rest is perfect as is. Or if you change it you will get less for it come sale time. People buying these cars love STD cars with high specification in good condition with maindealer history with full MOT.

I know that the 335d is auto only, but the 325 and 330 are available as manual - did you mean that a 325 or 330 should not be bought as manual?
Yes the auto really suits them plus hardly any are manual too Welshbeef said:

For the mileage the OP is talking about, surely need to budget for a transmission fluid change or a transmission refurb at some stage??Tyres get michelin pilot sport 3 should last 40k a set c£800
£800 for a set of tyres for a 3-series?? Ouch. Makes me glad I'm only running 16" wheels on mine. £320 for a set of OEM Continentals.

I'd always take the manual. Have had the auto 'box in a 535d and tried it in the 330d, and in my opinion it's poor. If you actually like driving, get the manual. Bearing that in mind, the life of the clutch, as with any car, depends almost entirely on the sympathy or otherwise of the owner.
Nope. If your doing c25k a year you are doing a lot of mundane m way driving hitting lots of traffic jams. You will want an auto take the stress out of it. Plus for the i6 the auto really is the better choice.
If you want a Drovers car why not get the petrol and manual as the auto diesel works very well uses the engines best rather than letting the individual decide
I'm probably asking the wrong people here - you're probably very biased - or saying that - very knowledgable!
But, are BMWs really reliable?
I know they have a good reputation but i work with a girl who has just replaced her 118d SE with a new Mini, and she always seemed to have issues with her 1-series. It was sold at around 70k, on a 54 plate, saying that though - dont think it was ever serviced.
Also, know of a guy who's just chopped in his 520d M-Sport, 05 plate with around 100k on the clock, for a Honda Civic company car - the main reason being that he could feel the turbo starting to give up the ghost and wanted shut before it broke. Obviously, im no expert, but just going off what's been said by them.
Still, doesn't really put me off as yet!

He could feel the turbo was about to fail?? Could he bend the gear stick with his mind too?!!

Seriously, though BMWs in general are fine, if you want a worry free drving experience buy new or pay for the warranty.
Any car can be crap.

As for the car comment - i agree - anyone can produce a "Friday afternoon" car. I bought my Ibiza on the strength of it being a cheap VAG hot hatch (albeit a diesel one) and touch wood, it's been great. A colleague bought a VW Passat on the strength of mine being great - and had nothing but trouble with it.
Been recommended a good local indie specialist.
Has quoted me finance on 2 cars, both 57 plates.
325d M-Sport Auto with 55k for £15800 (Le Mans blue)
and
520d SE Manual with 33k for £13k (Black with black cloth)
Going to consider these and may try to get in for a test drive over the next week or two.
Also, looking at a very tidy private sale, silver 57 plate 320d SE (you know who you are!!), cheaper than the above 2!
