We have a boiler here with a hotwater tank. We have the hot water set to once a day for the morning as we don't need it on later in the day.

However, the boiler keeps kicking in when both the heating is off and it's outside of the time when the water should come on. Any idea as to what could be up with it?

I would guess that the system is fully pumped with either two motorised valves or one three port valve.

All the timer / controller does is open the valves, there are microswitches in them which cause the boiler to fire, so it's likely that a valve has stuck.

So it's a job for a plumber, I have BG coverage for pretty much everything so I'll give them a call.

So it would make sense that the boiler fires up when the tank drops below the designated temp and then shuts off shortly afterwards? I'm not that good with plumbing to be honest!

Do you know if you've got two separate motorised valves? If so, then that's the most logical problem - that the hot water valve has jammed open so the microswitch in there is firing the boiler whenever the boiler thermostat calls for heat.

Thanks for the replies. I'll get British gas out anyway as that's what I'm paying them for. Failing that I'll call on my trusty spark!

British Gas should sort it or any competent Heating Engineer.

Most (not all) Electricians I've dealt with struggle when it comes to heating controls.

Maybe you should be dealing with proper Electricians and not Housebashers.

Sadly, working for a company and not myself ( am I the only person on PH that isn't a CEO?) I don't get to choose who I work with and it has become apparent to me, as with most trades, having a qualification doesn't make you competent!

I work with a plumber and a spark, so don't have the issue with sparks trying to wire a heating system.

But have come across a few people mid wire, or have followed their work to find it wrong. If the spark doesn't understand how a heating system works, the process of how a stat calls, valves open and the boiler coming on. They have a really hard time wiring.
