bought one, still attached to engine, lovely job all painted up, engine rally build, I'm told - gearbox type 9 I'm told - reverse left, press down and forward, fifth, right through gate and forward.
size 30" long. bought another today £60 got it home, took it to garage - minor differences in casing but mainly identical - what does a type 9 look like? someone please set me straight

The main difference between the type 9 and an ordinary four speed is the 5th gear sandwich plate.
This is situated between the rear of the main box and the output shaft casting.
If you have got the reverse to the left (via pushing down the gear lever) and forward and the fifth is to the right and forward then yes it is most likely a type 9 box.
The gear lever is usually fixed to the output shaft casting via 3 torx head bolts rather than the plastic screw in unit on the four speed boxes.
The type 9 is also sometimes known as the "N type" box.
