Hi guys,
Have his picked my gf up from work and when starting the car the engine max rev'd. Tried to have a look what was wrong and it seems the peddle is broken. There is no tension holding the peddle up so it is fully depressed.
Anything we can do?
Car is a Renault clio mk2

Thanks !!

I was hoping you'd be posting that from your iPhone... from the fast lane of the M6 biggrin

Or your butterfly is jammed open. A snapped cable wouldn't do that.

Agreed - however a broken return spring on a "fly by wire" throttle will.

Anyone know when did clios go FBW Throttle?

Is it possible that the throttle is electronic and its just the spring in the pedal that's snapped. Lift the pedal up and see if the revs return to idle

Sounds like the cable has snapped.

Buy a new one from your local motor factors, spent 15 minutes fitting it.
I doubt it has a cable.

Why would it not have one?

And if it doesn't, why does "Mk2 Clio throttle cable" chuck up loads of results?

It depends on the arrangement at the throttle itself, whether or not a snapped cable would cause this, but it's where i'd be looking first.
Bottom line is we don't know but from late 90's most manufactures started moving over to FBW throttles in order to meet emisions - what you input from the throttle pedal is managed by the ECU

Cables really are a thing of the past

If it is a MK2 Clio 1998-2001 it will have a throttle cable as there was a recall on these, not sure about mk2 Clios 2001-2006.

Snapped cable would cause the engine to idle regardless of input

Stuck butterfly or cable would cause the engine to race and the pedal to go floppy

If it happened suddenly (rather than the throttle getting progressively heavier and sticking occasionally) I'd guess that the return spring on the throttle pot has gone

More constructively, if the pedal is being lifted and the revs don't die, that (to me) would suggest it's not FBW and is mechanical.

Sorry, you misunderstand, Early Mk2 Clio's did have throttle cables. I wasn't asking why modern cars don't have them, i was asking why this car wouldn't have one.
I didn't say it wouldn't have one, I said I doubt it would, this going off the fact my Mk2 Clio doesn't have one. Sorry to have posted this terrible misinformation in the first place.

You are correct I did miss-understand you - not sure the OP actually said if it was an early or a late MKII Clio just it's age hence my comments about FBW

(TBH I'm not even sure if I could tell the difference between an early and a late MKII Clio - please don't take this as an opportunity to educate me wink)
