OK, so I have an intermittment squeeling noise coming from under the bonnet - it happens when cold, when hot and no logic to when it happens...

And sometimes it just doesnt happen for ages!

It reminds me of the 'loose' fanbelt noise my dads Viva (remember them??) used to make....

Any ideas?

Water pump.

My new one was a bit noisy when tested with water.

When I added antifreeze it disappeared.

Could be yours is on the way out, a cheap fix.

By the way, water pumps, like alternators, there is a choice inbetween cheapies and the more expensive better ones!

This is cheap, can't be bad, from an L/R dealer!

This is expensive.

Anyhoo, an easy job, get them spanners out!

Take a 2ft length of hose, stick one end in your ear, block up the other ear and use the other end of the hose to determine source of squeel/noise.
couldn't be easier!

Changed the belt over as well thinking it was that but no luck. only happens when i first turn the car on when cold. the sound is there for a couple of minutes then seems to go away. if i increase the revs the sequel seems to get faster.

Do you have power steering? I have the same with my RR Classic. It's either the power steering pump bearing or the fluid needs to be changed.

I've had this happen on two different cars now and tbh on both occasions the main agent who'd fitted the belts didn't seem too surprised when I returned to report the problem......... Certainly worth trying a replacement belt first before looking at more expensive fixes.

Why do you not isolate the problem by taking the belt off and then starting the car from cold scratchchin 1 minute should be ample time to source if the noise as disappeared or not confused if it does then you can then locate the noisy auxiliary smile

Thanks for all the responses...

A few things...

HCM - thanks for the linkys - clearer now...

Alex - cheers

Oz - cheers

Peter 66 - no PAS....it is basic 'vanilla' flavour...

Simon - not sure about that....

So, I think I will simply change the belt...and see what happens...

Like I said previously - this happens cold, hot, after 1 yard, after 10 miles....there is absolutley not pattern or logic to it...

So, one last plea for help - where can I get one of these belts from? Do Motoserve do it? And (although I have a bible), how easy is the job?

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers.

Mine is a serp engine and I have found this in the forum...

"Photograph current routing

Push tensioner to one side

Add belt to same route

Release tensioner!"

No nuts!!

Can anyone post a pic of how and where to 'push' the tensioner??

Look in the back of where the tensioner pulley is and you will see a square hole. A (I think 1/2") square drive fits in this hole perfectly and you can just lever forwards to loosen then slip off the belt.

Pretty sure there is one nut to loosen at the bottom of the pulley before levering forwards (i think 13mm?)
