Which Nikon SLR to replace D100?

I have a D100 which has one or two faults and as it's our 25th wedding anniversary Mrs jagracer has offered to buy me a new camera. I was looking at the D300s or 700 (latter maybe too expensive) but wondered if any of the cheaper 000 series cameras would be as good or suitable for me. I shoot mainly motorsports and don't use many different programmes, mainly shutter or aperture priority. What I do need is reasonably good autofocus that is fast and compatible with my oldish Nikkor lenses. Any guidance appreciated.

IMO the D200 should be forgotten about, quite old now and the sensor is way behind.

The D300s should be replaced in a few months with a D400, probably the 16.7mp D7000 sensor, which is superb, by far the best sensor made so far.

D300 is a great camera and worth picking up cheap. Else look at the D7000, nto quite the perfomance/build of the x000's but still fantastic.

The main benefits IMHO of the D300 over D200 are lower noise (though whether this is a factor in motorsport is up to you), a larger higher-res monitor and faster playback scrolling.

I've just bought a D7000 and my initial impressions (although very different starting point) over my D50 is that it's an excellent camera and they've addressed pretty much all the things that annoyed me about the D50. That being said I know the same doesn't apply for the D100.

Go crop sensor for AF speed, I'm looking at a D7000 for video and a spare/replacement to go alongside the D700 and it looks a fair price for what you get

Noticably faster AF using the same lenses on my D300 over D700
