First post & thread so mite aswell say howdy first!! I have been a frequent browser of Pistonheads for a couple of years and skimmed the forum a few times (work times) but now registered as I'm need of some mixed & unbiased advice.
Basically I have now reached the first 'milestone' with regards to driving experience of 3 years along with being raped by insurance companies & not claiming for 3 years and finally reaching my 21st birthday this week. All of this along with my modest promotion in work has finally allowed me to consider upgrading from my Veyron-shaming Earth-stopping-torque beast of a Corsa 1.7CDTI to something a bit sportier and now I have hit the dilemma of what to go for.
Looking for something thats:

Looking for something thats:
- Hatchback (when I hit 30 I'll consider saloon, 40 an estate, 50 a people carrier and finally a gold Daewoo Matiz when I hit 60)
- Minimum of a 1.6 engine (turbocharged of course, as anything to aid in the suck-squeeze-bang-blow of small displacement motors other than strapping a pack of steroid-overdosed greyhounds to the front is more than welcome)
- No older than late 2007 (atleast I can try and pretend that I owned it from new while looking as swish as a blind bomb technician)
- Rather 'rapid' as the Frosty Jack swigging hoodies would yell from the street corner (along with a bolt-on 'laaaaaaa' or 'likkkeee' at the end of every sentence)
- Easy to tune so that when the time arises when I become bored with the grunt of the standard model I can then get in to a depressed frenzy of deciding whether to do the sensible thing and upgrade to something better, or modify the breasticles out of this car in to a little monster.
My money would be on something turbocharged so it can just be re-mapped when you get bored. Focus ST/Golf GTi/Astra VXR if you want to keep it in the VX family.
On the other hand something like a BMW 130i may be slightly better, it has the badge and RWD although not the tuning potential (also for 10k it may be an 06 car, you may get a 07 for 12k though)

I did look towards the Clio 200 as I think they look rather snazzy (I wear luminescent striped socks to work so my views tend to be a little different from everyones taste) but then it occured that I was a little intimidated by the French car image of 'Tom Greens mental state is better built than a French car' and plus as has been said you could spend all of your girlfiends recently deceased grandparents funeral fund on tuning it and you will still not have anything to excuse it.
Any personal reviews along with these cars? Also been looking at the likes of Suzuki Swifts, Mini Cooper JCW R56's, Seat Leon Cupras, Mazda 3 MPS's and other turbo hot hatches that are not as frequently seen these days.

You seem to have it all mapped outJust get some insurance quotes on prospective vehicles first - I reckon it's still gonna hurt a little
I have read in to the 3MPS (mark 2) and they are apparently one of the spoiled underdogs of the hot hatch genre, shame they didn't add the 4 wheel drive system from the 6MPS as I bet that would be something thats not far off a scooby doo!!

Missus has a Mini Cooper S on an 08 plate. Its a great car with a very responsive engine! I believe a new intercooler, exhaust and remap would see 220bhp comfortably and reliably. I think they look more special than the other smaller hot hatches.
I'd love a fully souped JCW with black everything, trim, roof, wheels etc!! Maybe red calipers then!

What about pushing the envelope and getting a TVR V8s? You might be able to get one on a classic policy for insurance purposes, and it'll be original, sound lovely and the roof comes off too......... Not 3rs old etc but that will fade into insignificance when you start the V8 up.... Or if you can get a Chimaera insured on a classic policy........
