MY2010 RRS TDV8 3.6 vs TDV6 3.0
Discussion
Hi Everyone, I'm trying to compare a couple of cars and would be grateful for your help. Both are a similar age/mileage but one is the V8 and one is the V6. The 0-60 and top speeds are similar and so I would likely go for the V6 as its more fuel efficient. However, the V8 has better equipment (eg Adaptive Cruise, Locking rear diff) and is only £2k more. To get a V6 with the same equipment, I’d be looking at £4k more so I wanted to ask:
Apart from the MPG, are there any additional running costs that the V8 has?
Are there any other pros/cons of the 2010 RRS TDV8 that I should consider?
Do any RRS models come with cooled seats or do they only come with heated seats?
What does the locking rear diff do? Would it be helpful in getting up an un-gritted hill when it snows?
Thanks!

regardless of the diff you are limited by the 'low profile' road tyres - imo winter tyres are the only 'real' option because with the best diff system in the world if the tyres treads are full of snow you are going nowhere! What does the locking rear diff do? Would it be helpful in getting up an un-gritted hill when it snows?
Thanks!

TDV6 will probably hold its money better in the futureAre there any other pros/cons of the 2010 RRS TDV8 that I should consider?

No ventilated seats in a RR Sport
Rear diff lock just stops the car from moving the power around on the rear axle. Hardly worth it in this country in my opinion
TDV8 would get my vote every time.
Although the 3.0 TDV6 has similar power output to the 3.6 TDV8, IMO it just lacks the 'something' - Probably the lovely V8 thump that the TDV8 produces.
...and as for resale values, IMO I think the TDV8 would have better residuals as there are far fewer of them!
The locking rear diff makes a big difference if you intend using the vehicle off-road. It is something that is very rarely specified and as such, more typically found on ex-LandRover Experience vehicles. As such, it would raise an eyebrow with myself and I'd want to know who the original owner was. Chances are that the locking rear diff was specked as it was intended it use the car off-road.
Would you be looking at the G4 RRS on the market at the moment as it would be fairly obvious who the original owner was...

How on earth will the V6 hold its value better in the future, please explain......No ventilated seats in a RR Sport

Thanks for asking the question - I am having EXACTLY the same dilemma just now........... spooky
I have plumped for the TDV8, having tried the 3.0TDV6, I felt that although it on paper was as fast / powerful / etc it just seemed a little wheezey in comparison to the TDV8 (and even though it's a diesel................. it's still a V8 isn't it?!!!! (see other posts for explanation ;-) )
My only problem with the decision is actually finding a TDV8 for sale with absolutely ALL the spec I want on it, as you say all seem better spec'd, but I am still being quite fussy (rear DVDs, premium ICE, parking cameras x5, privacy glass................ and LOADS more "must-have's" - now you see the extent of my pickiness!!!)
good luck!
if you find a perfect one and change your mind, let me know!!

PS don't know about you, but I am planning to wait for the 2012MY (8-speed...... hmmm, tempting......) RRS to come out, think my negotiation will have a lower start-point then IYKWIM!!
PPS the other advantage of the TDV8 is that LR haven't "locked out" the ECU to prevent remap (although some can now get round the "firewall" on the TDV6 apparently)

Hmmm... Not sure.If they still fitted the TDV8 to the RRS maybe but as it hasn't been fitted for a little while, I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make.

Thanks to all of you for the replies. In the end I didn't go for either of the cars that I mentioned in my original post. Having driven both, I couldn't notice enough difference between them to justify the extra running costs of the V8 or the fact that it is now a discontinued model but this particular V6 didn't have the spec of the V8 that I preferred.
The new 3.0 engine is a huge improvement to its predecessor (the 2.7) and hardly any different in performance to the 3.6. This explains why 73% of orders in MY2010 were for the V6 and why Landrover stopped making the V8 engine in MY2011. This can be seen in lower second hand prices of the 3.8 vs a similarly spec'd and aged 3.0 so I do sympathise with:
We've had it a few weeks now and I have to say I'm so pleased with it. I bought it for my wife as our family car because we live in the county and got snowed in for a week last December. I've still got my 911 turbo however, the RRS is great fun and I cant help 'borrowing' it all the time!!
Apart from the 3.0 engine, the MY2010 has better road holding than the previous model and also the new interior changes make a big difference so I would definitely recommend going for a 59-reg or later if you can.

I therefore decided that I wanted the V6 but, one that was highly spec'd like a V8. It had to be a 59-reg or later in order to get the 3.0 engine and the much improved interior. In the end, I found one with all of my must haves: Rear DVDs, Premium Ice, Surround Cameras, Sunroof, Premium Extended Leather and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC which was standard on the V8 but a £1400 option on the V6). The only thing I couldn't get was cooled seats; they are only available on 'big' Range Rover. We've had it a few weeks now and I have to say I'm so pleased with it. The 6-speed is silky smooth and so I'm not sure how much difference the 8-speed would make. However, if you want the V8 you wont be able to get an 8-speed because they stopped making the V8 in MY2011 (see my comment above) and as you say the 8-speed comes out in MY2012. Good luck with your search - hope you are as happy as I am. Its a great car!Gassing Station | Land Rover | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
