Black number plates

What's the deal with black number plates? I thought they wasn't legal?

Perfectly legal on older vehicles. Someone will be along in a moment with the relevant dates....

And Channel Islands cars too.

Did the plate only have numbers on it, no letters? I think that's the format for their plates.

Yes, it was all numbers

Guernsey then. jersey have a "J" in front of the number.

The lower the number the more valuable evidently.

I think no. 1 is on a motorbike.

I've seen a few cars driving around which are black with silver numbers... no letters.

Do they need to eventualy register the cars here? or can they run the black and silve without any problems?

One car I'm thinking of in particular is a green scirocco that goes to my gym, looks lovely with the black plate, but it's been a local car for at least a year now.

as long as it goes back to guernsey every 6 months then i believ it's ok.

Legal if the car was built prior to 1st January 1973. Same date as for road tax exemption. That means that mine are for show use only.

I just don't think mine looked at all right as a classic car with a modern number plate so these go on for shows and I get lots of moaning people.

Looks good though I think especially as the car is black and chrome.

There do seem to be an awful lot of people getting away with it on the road though especially on X5's!
