M6 Toll - To$$ers

I was driving up the M42 earlier and right where it splits into the M6 toll an HGV alongside on the left decides he wants to take the toll road so pulls right leaving me the choice of getting squished or also moving right onto the toll road.

I presume that as I don't want to go on the toll road there is a choice to leave it before paying - wrong

I presume that if I pull off at the first opportunity and explain / ask to turn around to go back that'll be ok - wrong.

So for avoiding an accident and travelling approx 4 miles in the wrong direction they want to charge me £10.

The sooner they go bust the better.

Have you actually read the thread?
If you are in the 2nd lane for the M42 turn your lane either goes left to the M42 or straight on to the Toll - especially easy when you are forced to by another road user.

Not really. If it's where I think it is the road layout takes you by default along the toll road.
There's no sign saying 'last chance to leave now or pay the toll'

lol thats bad luck mate. I always keep right along side the toll so this could happen to me.

No I WAS in the right lane.

The feckin lorry was in the wrong lane we were already in the hatched area.

Personally I'd blame the lorry driver, not the toll company.

I've always thought it was "sharp practise" that you have to "leave" the M42 as the toll road continues straight ahead instead of the other way around.

Lets face facts that was only ever designed (at great cost) to trap the unwary.

I presumed there was at least an option to turn around etc as that would seem reasonable

I've not driven that way much, but I have gone both ways at that junction a few times and I've never found it to be confusing.

OP, surely you could have braked?

I use that stretch of road regularly and that type of incident has never happenned to me and I have never seen it happen. TBH that stretch is rarely so busy that you have to be in the far right lane of the non toll lanes. IMO logic also dictates that you should anticipate sudden lane changes in the vicinity of this type of junction and position the car accordingly.

If you genuinely had no choice then I suppose its bad luck, if you were caught napping then its too bad, on that type of junction you really need to be alert.

How were the toll operators to know that you are genuine and not just a scam artist trying to blag some free toll road time? They are just doing their jobs.
