I know this has been done to death, but this is my problem at the mo.

Car starts from cold fine, when the engine is cold, if I put my foot on the gas too quickly, it actually causes the car to stumble a bit as though its going to cut out. After its warmed up a bit, it is fine, until the engine temp gets to 80 / 90 and then (when stationary) the idle seems to drop to 1500 for a few seconds before returning to 900ish. When it does return to 900, it is very lumpy and cuts out occasionally.

I've cleaned my stepper motor more times than I've driven the car and its fine. I've recently put new HT and shrouds on, but when I took a few of the plugs out, I noticed they are all pretty black (carbon) and 1 of them seemed to be a bit wet (oil / petrol).

I'm guessing that the lambda sensor would be the first place to go, but they seem to be difficult to check and I don't want to send it to the garage and pay a bill for something I could do myself.

Anyone any ideas?

Exactly the same problem as I am having.
Over fueling seems to be the problem but I have yet to determine whether that's due to poor spark, knackered airflow meter, bad injectors, poor standard ECU map etc etc.
If you work it out let me know!

I feel a rolling road session coming on, as this could be just about anything!!

Take it to someone who knows, it will be cheaper than replaceing the fuel injection system bit by bit.

Get the ECU plugged into the diagnostic device, I had a similar problem and Fernhurst did this for me and much to my surprise the error message said Stepper Motor (even after it had been cleaned) had it replaced and all was fine..

The diagnostice system may not be able to tell you exactly what it is but it can eliminate many things that it is not..

Hope this helps.

I've got an occasional problem where as soon as I pop the clutch in and drift to a halt the engine revs will drop to 200-300rpm and then sometimes stall.

I got Tower View to plug it into their diagnostics thingy and it showed that the ECU isn't getting a signal from the speed sensor, and as far as the ECU is concerned the car is always stationary!

The ECU apparently needs to know if the cars moving or not when dropping to idle, so it can up the revs a bit to compensate.

There's an amplifier that splits the signal from the sensor on the gearbox to the speedo and ECU (under the dash I think) and thats apparently faulty on mine. Have had it sorted yet though, may have a bash myself if I can remember all my electronics stuff from a few years back!!!

I found a previous post actually, which sounds similiar and points the problem to the coolant temp sensor, so I'm going to test that out. If I get it sorted, I'll let you know.

NB I havn't tried it, but I suspect, if I reset the ECU, it will probably be fine for a while (until it re-learns)

Ditto almost exactly ... however mine only does it about 1 journey in 20 and the weather is too nice to get it fixed at the moment!
I am making notes from these threads though

Nightmare! ref. me replacing the coolant temperature sensor:

I contacted a parts place and asked them for the Lucas part SNB802. They ordered the part and gave me a commercial ignition part XEMS1, I was a bit miffed 'cause I thought I was going to get the proper Lucas part, but when I came to fit the thing, it doesn't fit! its too big to go in the hole!

They (commercial ignition) say it is a replacement for the SNB802. funny thing is, when I contacted the parts place, they thought I was Mr Davies, who had only been in that morning for exactly the same part for his Chim - obviously a popular bit to go wrong this time of year!

I know loads of you have probably changed this sensor, has anyone else had this problem!

Is it possible my car (Chim 500) doesn't use the SNB802 part?

I got the right part (SNB802!) fitted it and my Trev is back to life again!

I can't believe the difference it made! The car was getting progresively worse, with missfiring and general lack of power, it cut out when the engine warmed up and the idle was high when you drew to a halt (until it dropped and cut out!) If I put my foot on the load pedal, it just made the whole situation worse with missfire and something which sounded like a spanner rattling round in my engine! (what is that noise?).

Now I've changed the coolant sensor, everytihng is perfect, I am so chuffed!

I've also put some redex in the petrol, thinking that everything would be carbonned up now, but I don't know if that will make any difference! I took off my dist cap and that was pretty cruddy inside too - the elements inside seemed to have scale on them, so I shined them all up, did the rotar arm too, that was pretty dirty.

All in all I'm a happy bunny again

NB If anyone has a similiar problem, I've got a duff sensor that I don't mind lending them, so you can elliminate if your sensor is duff as well
