My car has just had an additional £50 compulsary excess added to policy as it is deemed a high risk

A Zafira Diesel!

OK cant complain too much as renewal is lowest quote and dont intend to make any claims but high risk! must be a lot of bad/unlucky Zafira drivers with Directlinesmile

i had a claim this year after an idiot driver thought it would be a good idea to overtake on a blind corner.

after months of the liability being decided (despite the other driver obviously being at fault), the other party accepted liability.

however, when it came to renewing my insurance i could not use my 4 years no claims because someone had forgotten to change the claim's liability. i phoned swift cover who informed me that my claim was still being contested despite receiving an e-mail stating otherwise.

i was told that they could not put me through to the claims department and that i would have to hang up and phone again and wait through the queue all over again, just to speak to a different department within swiftcover to tell them to update their own files. i would then have to hang up and phone again and wait through the queue a third time to prove to swiftcover (my own insurance company) that i have the 4 years no claims bonus that i have worked up with them.

told them to jog on, and asked to speak to the manager(probably the guy on the left instead)

on a side note, out of pure interest i got a quote on my friends Noble M12.

it was cheaper by about two thirds, because (apparently) it is a safer car than my Toyota Corolla.

abject lesson: rarer cars are cheaper to insure

Had similar earlier this year, was quoted triple last years premium because when someone drove into the back of my car in stationary traffic, they hadn't figured out who was at fault silly despite getting a letter from them several weeks before telling me it was closed and all sorted and the car already having been repaired as they had admitted full responsibility.

"you will be charged more for having better brakes on your car"

"you will be charged more for using winter tyres on your car as they are a modification"

and the best one i have heard directly from a call centre: "you are being charged more for having your car stored in a garage over night as the garage will have to be covered aswell".

Phoenixz

P.S. i still don't understand how they can charge me more despite the fact the other party was at fault and took full liability

I take it you managed to persuade them to change their mind on those?

Insurance phone person once told me they won't mention the tracker (unactivated at the time, but was going to get it activated and wanted to get an idea of discount) since the premium might go up with the modification. Yes, I'm serious.
Also once fitted the OEM sports wheels to an A4 SE. Oh, that's extra... I asked how much to insure a sport rather than SE. Same price sir. They dropped the extra charge.
Mental!!!!

the insurance companies have been, or are being, forced to change their policy on winter tyres by motoring institutions and the government etc...

i hung up and spoke to someone else about the garage, who told me that the first person was speaking a load of s**te

you can't make insurance companies budge on the better brakes as the belief is that, by puting on better brakes you are intending to need them tongue out

and i still can't figure out how they get away with charging victims(those not at fault) more for claiming on someone elses insurance. most of them ask if you "have ever made a claim regardless of fault", which means they are like points on your licence that will never go away. there must be an ofcom or regulator for insurance companies that we can complain to.

I was told last week that a non turbo GTO is the exact same insurance as a twin turbo due to power being irrelevant and only the class of car matters.

Any modification to the outside of the freeby is classed as "exterior decorative change" this includes an A frame and a snorkle, if i wanted to fit them. I've justified the A frame, trying to justify the snorkle... hehe

Oh, and i once got told that, even though the smash was not my fault, the other party has admitted blame. I got told that due to the credit crunch i wuldnt get the full amount for my car, but that my premium wouldnt go up for renewal.... £60 rise it went. rolleyes

I also on this years renewal, got a long serving customer discount of..... £25 biggrin

My previous insurer told me that, if I selected my car as being "garaged overnight", it would need to be stored in my garage every single night without fail. Otherwise my insurance would be void - pfft!

something to put in the win category:

"The European Court has ruled that insurers can no longer consider whether you are a man or a woman when pricing insurance policies from 21 December 2012. The main policies to be affected are those which use gender as a factor in pricing for risk: motor insurance, annuities and life insurance."

i am still searching for a consumer regulatory body for the insurance companies, but still not sure who to complain to. thought it was The Association of British Insurers, but found out they actually fought to keep the gender discrimination on behalf of the insurance companies.

i think i'll check the FSA. there must be someone protecting the interests of the public from these theives and extortionists.

When insuring a Porsche 911 turbo S the insurance people wanted to know how many advanced driving courses I'd done (so I told them, lots), they then told me that putting my wife on the policy (who has done no advanced driver training) would reduce the premium by £180.

Yea... but why quizz me about how many advanced driving courses I'd done, and then reduce the premium because of my wife who had done none?!
