New "Transport" Museum is meant to open today.
I'm going to take the wee man on Saturday - anyone been yet?
A friend has been for a pre-opening tour, he said they've focused too much on the building, rather than the exhibits, and that it appears everything is displayed with a view to showcasing the architecture rather than the actual pieces on show, all under a weird green light.I'm going to take the wee man on Saturday - anyone been yet?
This photo below (not his, just a press clipping) shows that cars are displayed right up the wall, so you can't get up close

I'm still going to go and hope he was being overly critical.

Possibly part of the sustainability strategy - don't know how many times we nearly got chipped out of the old Yorkhill site cos the 3 then 4 then 5 now 6 year old could not stop touching the cars!
Still... as he has now paid toward the riverside appeal to build the new place... he should be able to touch the exhibits!

I went down today for a quick look and was pretty disappointed with what I seen.
On entry there was no indication of a grand opening, no balloons, no promotional badges on opening day .. nothing
There are very few new exhibits and it felt smaller than the old site with far less access to the cars. Everything seems to be boarded up with perspex and instead of letting you feel and touch, makes you relay on a video player.
The cars which are suspended from the roof look ok from a distance but you cant see anything about them up close. They look more like a art piece than an educational look at transport.
Upstairs again has a lot of wasted space with a tiny cafe and some model boats without descriptions.
The street scene was OK but never captured your imagination like it should. I suppose they could add some real life actors at weekends to get people in the mood but right now its pretty basic.
Lastly the staff all seemed pretty miserable and I overheard a few saying they were board already. Nobody was smiling or coming to tell you anything which was pretty pathetic for whats supposed to be a flagship attraction.

I was disappointed & genuinely prefer the old site. New place is too sterile with all the Glass cabinets etc.
If cars are your thing, all the cars being up in the air (with the exception the police granny and some odd choices (Panther Kallista) it doesn't cut it like the old one did - where you could have a good look up close at all the cars.
It has its good bits but feels like the kind of place I won't visit more than once. I went back to the old museum several times.

One thing that did surprise me, unless I missed it, I didn't see any reference to Jim Clark, Sir Jackie or even DC, Only motorsport references I seen wasColin's Scooby and a Mini Cooper with the front crashed in.
It had been a while since I was last at the museum but didn't they have one of Sir Jackie's Tyrrells on show?
